PhD students Qammar Almas and Adam Proud will each present a seminar on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 12:30 pm. Qammar Almas's presentation is entitled "Novel Computational Approaches in a Big Data Context: Application to Dative Bonding" and Adam Proud's presentation is entitled "Quantifying Electronegativity Using Localized Molecular Orbitals." The seminars will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212. All are welcome!
Canadian Blood Services is on campus this Thursday October 20 at the W. A. Murphy Student Centre. There will be a blood drive as well as recruitment for stem cell donors.
Blood Drive: Schedule your appointment now by downloading the “giveblood” app; set up an account at blood.ca or call 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283). Walk-ins will be accepted. Bring identification (health card, driver's license, etc.) and arrive well-hydrated (juice/water) after having eaten. Must be at least 17 years of age.

Everyone is invited to a special seminar delivered by Dr. Fred Colbourne titled "Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Challenges in Neuroprotection and Repair." Dr. Colbourne is a professor at the University of Alberta and a Canada Research Chair in Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke.His research focuses on experimental treatments for ischemic and hemorrhagic brain injury. He has studied therapeutic hypothermia since the early 1990s starting in rodent models of global ischemia. Presently, he is evaluating this treatment for intracerebral hemorrhage. He also studies a number of other treatment strategies (e.g., rehabilitation) in his translation-oriented research.

Dr. Tonya Stewart, a candidate for the open, two-year term community practice position in AVC's Department of Companion Animals will be interviewed on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. As part of this interview process, Dr. Stewart has been asked to provide a seminar to the campus community. The seminar is called "Obesity in Cats and Dogs" and will take place at 12:30 pm, in rooms 286B and 286C N, The McCain Foundation Learning Commons.
A CV and letter of intent are available upon request from Linda Constable in the AVC Dean's Office.
Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, November 4, 2016. They will be reviewed at the November meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after November 4 will be reviewed at the December meeting.
Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

Calling all singers! The UPEI Multicultural Choir and Song Circle will be meeting this Tuesday, October 18, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Robertson Library Building, on the basement level, room 103. This area is also accessible by an elevator, if needed (call Hailey – see below).
The multicultural choir is in its sixth year, and is a non-audition, open, free, and fun activity which brings people from campus and the community together, sharing songs from cultures all around the world! All are welcome.

Last year, UPEI and PEI Health and Wellness combined to offer a hot bowl of soup in a safe environment - healthy food for mental health. This year, gardens are adding physical health to our plan.
To increase sustainability, we invited the campus to donate bowls and spoons. We received 75 bowls and 15 spoons, and installed soap and sanitizer at the Chaplaincy Centre to decrease our footprint. As cottages close, we are hoping for more spoons and bowls. Donations can be left at the Chaplaincy Centre.
Our first event will be Wednesday October 19, 11:30 am -1:00 pm. Drop by with a bowl for a soul!

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.

· Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca
Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month.
The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.
