The Sociology/Anthropology Directed Studies class, "Transforming space into place," has been working diligently to transform Dawson Lounge into a place for students and staff to enjoy. Faculty Recognition Night will be held Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 7:00 p.m. (Reception: with live music, 6:30 p.m.) at the Culinary Institute.This event honours the winners of the Hessian Award for Excellence in Teaching and the UPEI Merit Award for Scholarly Achievement as well as those FA Members who are retiring. Tickets are $50.00 each (with a subsidized price of $25.00 for FA members and their guests), and can be pre-ordered at the Faculty Association Office, SDU Main Bldg., Room 315, Ext. 0438. The Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course. Dr. Andrew Peacock will read from his book, Creatures of the Rock, a book of animal stories told from the perspective of a veterinarian in Newfoundland and Labrador, on Tuesday, April 21, in AVC’s Lecture Theatre B, at 6:30 p.m. The book was in the top ten non-fiction sellers in independent bookstores in Canada. It is a funny, unflinching but ultimately heartwarming collection of tales about the connections between people and animals, and between people. Donations for the PEI Humane Society will be accepted at the door. All are welcome.

The cost to rent convocation regalia is $25.00 + taxes. Prepaid regalia can be picked up on Friday, May 8 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and on Saturday, May 9 starting at 8:00 am at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, room 114, upon presentation of a UPEI ID and the Gaspard online confirmation form. Regalia must be returned an hour and a half following the ceremony. UPEI wishes all students “good luck” with their final projects and exams! And, with Convocation 2015 around the corner—May 9, 2015, here are some important reminders we hope that you will share with any graduating students you know: 1. Students are required to order a gown and hood if they are attending their Convocation ceremony. The deadline to place their online order has been extended to Thursday, April 23. If students took courses at another institution with a “Letter of Permission”, they should request a transcript from the host institution be sent directly to the Office of the Registrar by Monday, April 27. 3. The list of 2015 graduates will be listed online on Tuesday, May 5. 4. For safety reasons, UPEI will only admit guests to the Convocation ceremonies who present invitations at the door. Invitations are typically available for pick up by May 1—refer to the Convocation Week Schedule found at www.upei.ca/convocation for details. Dr. Heather Gunn McQuillan, Director of the AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital, is pleased to announce that UPEI staff and AVC student appreciation discounts on products within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital are being re-implemented to recognize the dedication of students and employees. The first discount program being launched is for pet food products, beginning on May 1, 2015. The discount is on stocked and special order foods and will be applied at the time of payment by front desk staff who ask for understanding and patience as applying discounts can take time to process. If people could be conscious of the fact that non-staff/non-student clients are paying full price and to allow them to be served first, that would be greatly appreciated. Veterinary Teaching Hospital Pet Food Discount Policy 1. Starting May 1, 2015 the Veterinary Teaching Hospital will extend a professional courtesy to the faculty and staff of UPEI and to the students of the AVC by way of a discount on pet food sold in the VTH. i. All in-stock pet food will be discounted to a rate of cost plus 10%. ii. Special order-BULK: A special bulk order on pet foods will be available in addition to the regularly stocked foods. These will be scheduled orders (1-2 times per month) and must be pre-paid. These will be billed at a price of cost plus 10%. Any Royal Canin or Hills Science Diet dog or cat food available through CDMV can be ordered through this special ordering process including “in-clinic” bags of food. Gina Mortimer will be organizing these orders and will be in contact in the near future with how this process will occur. iii. Special orders outside of the scheduled bulk orders for prescription diets not routinely kept on the shelf can also be done with pre-payment, and will be ordered once minimum order targets are met (typically weekly).These will be billed at a price of cost plus 10%, so long as they are prepaid. Special orders that are not pre-paid are ineligible for discounting. iv. Proof of identification- In order to be eligible for the discount, individuals must identify if they are a student, staff, or faculty member. For students, they must give their AVC class year. For staff and faculty, they must provide their departmental address and/or show proof of UPEI staff status by being a current member in the UPEI online directory.

This is a reminder that in order to accommodate changes to software installed on computers in the student computer labs for the new school year (fall semester), we must receive requests including any installation media (CD’s, DVD’s, etc.) and any related licensing information such as serial numbers BEFORE June 1, 2015. (NOTE: Software should be Windows 7 compatible.) This deadline is necessary to allow us sufficient time to properly plan and implement the installation of new and upgraded software in order to ensure that our students have the software resources that they need. Email all requests to Stephen Mahar at smahar@upei.ca. Any requests received after June 1, 2015 will be applied in the next round of software updates. All software installations are required to be licensed as network installations and not as single workstations only. In order to ensure that your requested software is configured to meet your course requirements and specifications, please test your software after it has been installed before August 18, so that we can make any necessary adjustments. The University Senate meets regularly in AVC 286A/287. Recently, a chair (stool) was purchased specifically for use by an employee who takes the meeting minutes in order to alleviate back pain. It was delivered to the meeting room just prior to the March 13 meeting of Senate, but by the April 10 meeting, it had been removed. The chair is stool height, swivels, and has a back and metal base on which a message is engraved, "For Senate Use. Please do not remove from this room." Anyone who might be aware of the chair's whereabouts is asked to contact Security Services at 0384 or return it to its proper place.

The Annual Fund Campaign is a fundraising program run by the Department of Development and Alumni Engagement. The Campaign receives many donations from generous faculty, staff, alumni and friends who are keen to invest in UPEI and its students. Beginning in the 2015/16 fiscal year, a portion of these funds will be used to support special initiatives across campus through the new Annual Fund Projects Program. The SJDAWC at AVC is very pleased to announce a new animal welfare graduate scholarship. The Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Graduate Scholarship will support the training of researchers at the masters or doctoral level to pursue animal welfare research at UPEI. Both applied or more fundamental approaches to research pertaining to animal welfare are welcome. Applications for 2015-2016 will be accepted until May 25, 2015, with decision expected by the end of June. Students may take up their award at any time of the year but must do so within 12 months of the date of the letter of offer. Since 1994, generous support from the Sir James Dunn and Christofor Foundations has provided a stable foundation for the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre (SJDAWC) at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI. The Centre is very grateful to the Christofor Foundation for its renewed commitment for 2015 to 2020, which includes funding for the new scholarship. At its meeting on Friday, April 10, 2015, the Senate amended the following dates for the submission of course grades: -Course grades for fourth-year students must be submitted to the Registrar's Office by noon on Monday, April 27 (instead of noon on Saturday, April 25). -Course grades for third-, second-, and first-year students must submitted to the Registrar's Office by noon on Friday, May 1 (instead of noon on Wednesday, April 29). To accommodate these changes, the next meeting of Senate will now be Monday, May 4, 2015 instead of Friday, May 1, 2015.
