The campus community is invited to a public presentation by Dr. Ali Bonakdar, entitled “Challenges in Advanced Manufacturing Process Simulation with Application in Gas Turbine Engine”. Dr. Bonakdar is currently a Senior Gas Turbine Manufacturing Engineering Specialist at Siemens Canada and an Adjunct Professor at Concordia University. He is a candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering.
The presentation will take place Friday, April 10 at 2:45 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium (room 242), Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Everyone is welcome.
The UPEI School of Sustainable Design Engineering invites the campus community to its annual Engineering Design Expo and Awards Ceremony, on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at McMillan Hall in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre. Engineers PEI will make a special announcement at 5:30 pm that greatly benefits UPEI engineering students.

The Human Biology and Environmental Sciences research seminars will wrap up for the year on Friday, April 10 at 12:30 pm in Duffy Science Centre 204. Graduate students will present the following talks:
“Phytochemical profiling and anticancer analysis of select woody plants," presented by Colin Stetson (HUB), supervised by R. Hurta; co-supervised by J. McCallum
“Examining pain anxiety in young adult athletes,” presented by Gillian Potter (HUB), supervised by W. Montelpare

Dr. Truis Smith-Palmer, Department of Chemistry, St. Francis Xavier University will present a seminar on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Smith-Palmer’s presentation is entitled "Towards antifouling solutions: Raman studies of bacterial biofilms, and Surfactants which inhibit the settling or development of tunicate larvae." The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.
Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, Ambulatory Equine Service, Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI, will give a community workshop titled “The Truths and Myths of Equine Animal Welfare” on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 pm, in Lecture Theatre A. She will present the guidelines for minimum standards of care for the welfare of the horse, including proper nutrition, appropriate shelter, disease prevention and treatment, humane handling, and when necessary, end of life decisions and humane euthanasia. She will also provide information about recognizing signs for concern, such as how to score a horse’s body condition and what individuals can do if they suspect a horse is in distress and at risk.

The academic planning process is meant to build on the reflection, wayfinding, and planning that began with the work done on the UPEI Strategic Plan. The Academic Planning Group is currently in its fifth month of work since being created by Senate. We are currently still collecting data through public consultation and reviews being conducted by programs on campus. We expect to present our plan to Senate for the first Senate Meeting of the 2015-2016 academic year in September 2015.
The Academic Plan that is shaping up from our analysis of the data and from our deliberations is both about setting goals for our institution and about taking a practical look at the work that needs to be done to make UPEI an even better place to live and learn. We used the directions listed in the strategic plan as our starting point and will be using our various feedback mechanisms to contextualize those directions and uncover new and interesting directions for our university.
In the coming months, we encourage you to participate in the academic planning process, both during formal events and through direct communication with any of the members of the committee. Each item of feedback will be considered in the development of the Academic Plan. We are working towards a plan that we can use to help shape our future directions and make real immediate change to our University.
Public consultations will occur in the Robertson Library "Sun Room". Signage by the stairs in the Robertson Library will direct you to the room on the second floor.

Drs. Peter Koritansky and Malcolm Murray from the UPEI Philosophy department will debate the question: "Does God Exist," and if so, what is the best argument for God's existence? Dr. Koritansky will be taking the affirmative position, that God exists with the cosmological argument as his justification. Dr. Murray will be taking the negative position, affirming that belief in God has no rational basis. Come and vote for the winner of the argument!
The debate takes place Friday, April 10 at 6:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium (Room 242), Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Doors open at 6:00 pm. All are welcome.
On Tuesday, April 7, Louise Roux, Department of Biomedical Sciences, will present "Effect of water temperature on the immune response of American lobster (Homarus americanus) and the pathogenicity of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV)" while Walaa Nasry, Department of Pathology and Microbiology, will present "Investigating the relationship between inflammation and CD147 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)". The seminar begins at 3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Everyone is welcome.
Department Heads and Chairs are reminded that the University's fiscal year-end is April 30, 2015. To ensure that 2014-15 expenditures are recorded in the 2014-15 operating budget, all external requisitions (both electronic and hard copy) to be processed for purchase orders must be received by the Procurement Services office no later than 12 noon Friday, April 24, 2015. Our auditors require that goods charged to the 2014-15 budget must be both invoiced and received on or before April 30, 2015 and as such, requisitions will be reviewed for acceptability prior to the April 24, 2015 final cut-off date.
Goods invoiced or received after April 30, 2015 will be charged to the next fiscal year (2015-16). The April 24, 2015 cut-off date will be strictly enforced, so please make your plans now for the remaining weeks of the 2014-15 fiscal year.
Hours worked and approved for the month of April will be charged to the 2014-15 fiscal year for students and other hourly-rate employees.

Faculty must also register online to order academic hoods and gowns through Gaspard Gown Service. The cost to rent convocation regalia is $25.00 + taxes.
Prepaid regalia can be picked up on Friday, May 8 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and on Saturday, May 9 starting at 8:00 am at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, room 114, upon presentation of a UPEI ID and the Gaspard online confirmation form. Regalia must be returned an hour and a half following the ceremony.
