Troy Life & Fire Safety will be performing fire alarm inspections throughout campus beginning Thursday, June 11/15. As part of the inspections, there will be testing of alarms, however, there will be an audible notification stating this is a test at the beginning and when the test is completed. The building occupants are not required to evacuate during the testing period. The ringing of alarms is required to test their function and to ensure the speakers work throughout the building. This will be a small portion (up to 2 hours) of the total time they are in the building.

NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) has begun its third annual round of community engagement visits to provide researchers, students and other stakeholders an opportunity to learn more about some recent program and policy developments. These visits will also serve as a platform for the community to ask questions and seek more information from some of NSERC’s grants and scholarships staff.
Some of the topics that will be discussed include:
• Discovery Research (update on Federal Budget, NSERC strategic plan, program news, etc.);
• Scholarships and Fellowships (update on post-doctoral fellowships and Collaborative Research and Training Experience program);
• Women in Science and Engineering (update on new Chairs for Women in Science and Engineering as well as other initiatives); and
• Policies and guidelines – (update on a variety of issues ranging from grant funding extensions to Open Access).

Richard Nowakowski will talk games in a public lecture on Friday, June 5 at 5 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, as part of the Canadian Mathematical Society’s 2015 Summer Meeting at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Chess and checkers are two games that Nowakowski studies, as he specializes in two-player games where the players move alternately, there are no random factors and the last player to move determines the winner. Nowakowski is heavily involved with the CMS and mathematics in the Maritimes. He volunteers with Dalhousie Math Circles, a mathematics outreach program based out of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Dalhousie University, where he works as a research professor.
The public lecture will launch the CMS Summer Meeting, taking place at UPEI from June 5-8. Over 300 mathematics professionals, students and educators from Canada and around the world are expected to attend.
No mathematical background is required to appreciate the talk!
UPEI's Faculty of Education is pleased to be collaborating with the organizing committee for the Salon du livre de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard. The second edition of the expo will be presented at the University of Prince Edward Island’s W.A. Murphy Student Centre from June 3-7, 2015.
The Salon du livre de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard is an event intended to bring together the province’s Francophones and Francophiles and promote reading and literacy in general as individual and collective development tools. Through its actions, it helps develop a love of reading and literature, from creation to distribution, while promoting the French culture and language. The gives the Acadian, Francophone and Francophile population the opportunity to access a wide variety of French language literary works and meet authors and illustrators.
(NEW! To facilitate the transition to earlier registration dates, the $100 tuition deposit will be deferred until July 17 for current, returning students.)
Beginning this year, both new and returning UPEI students are able to register earlier for 2015–16 courses than ever before. Registration* for returning UPEI students opens in June as follows:

June 3 – third-year students
June 4 – second-year students
June 5 onward – first-year students, and registration remains open to all students

From June 26 to 30, the Jeux de l’Acadie (Acadian Games) will be held in Charlottetown, including on the UPEI campus.
The Games are a combination of sport and cultural activities for Acadian and francophone youth from the Atlantic Provinces that promote youth development, the Acadian culture, and the French language.
The University will host officials and members of the various missions in residence housing and for meetings, as well as be the venue for a number of sport activities. It is a large-scale event that would not be possible without the support of volunteers. There a number of volunteer roles available. While bilingualism is an asset, English-only speaking volunteers are welcome to register.

Canadian Catholic Campus Ministers host an annual lecture named for their first Episcopal Liaison, Bishop John Sherlock. The 2015 Sherlock Lecture speaker is Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, Vatican Astronomer. The lecture will be Thursday May 28 at 7:00 pm in the Amphitheatre of UPEI’s Duffy Science Centre. Admission will be by a free-will offering to support Brother Guy’s work at The Vatican Observatory.
Thursday’s lecture "At the Margins of the Universe: The Vatican's Astronomical Observatory" will include why the Vatican supports an observatory and how we do outreach to people on the margins who hunger to know about their place in the universe.
Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ is the President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. A Jesuit brother and astronomer at the Vatican Observatory, his research is in meteorites and asteroids. He is a native of Detroit, Michigan. He received his BA and MA degrees from MIT, and earned his PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona in 1978. Along with more than 200 scientific publications, he is the author of six popular astronomy books. In 2014 he received the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences for excellence in public communication in planetary sciences.
Everyone is invited to a public talk by Summerside’s Dr. Tiber F. M. Falzett on Scottish Gaelic language and culture as passed down through generations on Prince Edward Island. Hosted by the Institute of Island Studies at UPEI, the presentation is Tuesday, May 26, 2015, 7:30 p.m. in the UPEI Faculty Lounge.
Through oral traditions, music, songs, poetry, newspaper articles, and census returns, attendees will be taken on a journey in the life of Scottish Gaels on Prince Edward Island from their arrival on these shores to the decline and eventual disappearance of the language from everyday Island life by the close of the last century.
Excerpts of field recordings made by Dr. John Shaw for the Institute of Island Studies in 1987, as well as earlier recordings made by others, will serve as primary vehicles in our explorations. Tiber will play these Gaelic recordings, which can be easily followed with English translations he’ll provide. This small but significant collection of recordings holds tremendous potential for the homegrown linguistic and cultural renewal of these local traditions at the communal level.
Tiber has himself conducted over a decade of fieldwork among Scottish Gaels in Cape Breton and the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles. He enjoys a good cèilidh sharing Gaelic songs and tunes on the bagpipes. He recently completed his PhD in Celtic and Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh and has now returned home to the Island, where he is now a Research Associate of the Institute of Island Studies. He looks forward to making connections with fellow Islanders interested in Scottish Gaelic in our province.

Dr. Johanna Wolf, Associate Professor for the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University, British Columbia, is a candidate for UPEI's new Canada Research Chair in Sustainability, Resilience, and Island Contexts. Dr. Wolf will make two presentations, both of which will open to the campus and research communities. A general presentation, entitled “Better off or Worse for Wear: Sustainability and Resilience Through Climate Adaptation", will take place on May 27, 2:00 – 3:00 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre A. A technical presentation, entitled “Connect, Collaborate, Co-produce: Shaping Climate Change Adaptation to Foster Island Resilience and Sustainability", will take place on June 1, 10:00 – 11:00 am, in AVC Lecture Theatre A. A reception will follow each presentation in the McCain Foundation Learning Commons at AVC. All are welcome to attend.

This will be a 3 hour training session with handouts, based on CCAC Recommended Syllabus (exam included).
The Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course. (A refresher course is required every 5 years.)

Have you been considering developing an online course or are you curious about online learning and want to explore what you can do? The E-Learning Office is having a two day E-Learning Boot Camp. May 27th 9:00-12:00 will be focused on planning lessons for storm days. On May 28th from 9:00-12:00 Bonnie Stewart and Charlene VanLeeuwen will talk about their experience teaching online and will also be available to answer questions. Please bring content and/or ideas related to your own courses as the sessions will be
interactive. Both afternoons e-learning instructional designers will be available for individual appointments to help you continue working on what you start in the morning sessions.
