Campus Notices

Dear International Students of UPEI:

I am conducting a study as part of my master’s degree in the Faculty of Education. This study focuses on how international students utilize rubrics to support learning in the context of higher education.

I am looking to connect with international students who come from countries outside North America and use English as a second language. In addition, they must have completed at least one semester of study and have experienced rubrics in at least one course. I will conduct one-on-one interviews via Zoom to collect data. A water bottle ($25 value) will be offered to each participant as an honorarium for participating in the interview.

I believe that your participation will bring valuable information about your different assessment experiences in your home country versus the new context, problems, or issues you have had in the Canadian academic context, and how you used rubrics in dealing with those problems. This information will be new to universities, faculties, and instructors. This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through the University of Prince Edward Island Research Ethics Board (Ref No:6009055).

Participation in this study is voluntary and there are no known or anticipated risks to your participation in this study. If you are interested in participating into this study, please contact me (yding4610@upei.ca) or my supervisor, Dr. Tess Miller (902-620-5072; tsmiller@upei.ca). Do not hesitate to reach out to us, if you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information to assist you in reaching a decision about participation. I very much look forward to your participation and thank you in advance for your assistance with this study.

The UPEI Homestay Program is looking for host families in Charlottetown and surrounding areas.    Families receive $900/mth and have the opportunity to meet students from all over the world. If you or anyone you know is interested please contact Tyson at homestay@upei.ca.

If you are not already using eduroam, please visit www.upei.ca/wifi for instructions on how to connect to "eduroam" Wi-Fi. It is important that you do this before August 4, in order to avoid an interruption to your Wi-Fi service.

Crows on campus know if you have food or something that looks like food.

  • NEVER FEED the crows or drop food on the ground. This includes food wrappers.
  • KEEP FOOD HIDDEN inside a bag or backpack. Do not just carry a food container. Crows can smell it!
  • Should a crow start to attack you, WAVE YOUR HANDS and forcefully shoo them away and continue your walk. That way the crow will learn that it's not productive to show this type of behaviour.

If everyone on Campus is consistent in dealing with the crows, hopefully, we will all be able to enjoy our beautiful PEI summer outside!

Today is World Hepatitis Day.  Did you know that 44% of people living with Hepatitis C are unaware of their infection?  You may be at risk:

- if you have ever shared drug-use equipment,

- if you have ever shared personal care items such as razors or toothbrushes,

- if you have ever had a tattoo or piercing done where non-sterile equipment was used,

 - if you have ever lived in a region where hepatitis C is common,

 - if you were exposed to blood during sexual activity or

 - if you received a blood transfusion before 1992.

The best way to know is to get tested!  Contact the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre and book an appointment with our Registered Nurse to review your risk profile and get tested.  Telephone 902-566-0616 or email:  healthcentre@upei.ca to obtain an appointment.

Often when you call for ITSS help, you will be asked “have you turned it off and back on again”. We’re not trying to annoy you ….or are we?  Sometimes a reboot is all that is needed. If you notice that:

  • Your PC feels hot
  • The fans inside are making noise
  • A file of application won’t open
  • Things are freezing or taking ages to respond
  • New software has updated
  • New hardware was installed

Try the famous TURN OFF, TURN ON method, and if that doesn’t work give us a call 902-566-0465!

Inclusive teaching and learning is about more than accepting all learners. It’s about actively removing barriers to learning so that everyone involved has the same opportunities to grow and develop. To create a learning environment that is both safe and welcoming to everyone, you need to intentionally and thoughtfully consider your curriculum, your course design, your teaching practices and your assessment methods. In this introductory workshop, you will be shown areas in which you can begin to thoughtfully and empathetically work collaboratively with your learners to diversify your content and delivery. Hosted by the E-Learning Office, this workshop takes place online Tuesday, August 3rd from 10 to 11 am.

Register here for this session.

Effective July 2021, visitors to the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre will continue to be required to wear a face mask.  We are unable to guarantee physical distancing during your visit; consequently, for the safety of you, other visitors, and our staff we will continue to require you to wear your masks. We recognize this may be an inconvenience for some but appreciate your cooperation.

Stay safe and vaccinate!
