Ethics protocols that involve "more than minimal risk" must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB). The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, March 25, 2022.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve "more than minimal risk," renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

All research compliance applications, including Research Ethics Board application forms, must be submitted through the Researcher Portal. This online system is paired with electronic approvals to replace the hard-copy signatures process.

Candidate Bio:

Dr. Reuben Domike is a Teaching Professor of Technology and Information Management (T.I.M.) at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC). He specializes in entrepreneurship/innovation. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering Practice (joint engineering and management) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) awarded in 2004 and an MBA from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Prior to joining UCSC, he was an associate professor at the Brigham Young University and an associate professor at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in the Faculty of Business where he was the founding director of the university-wide Hostetter Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. Prior to joining UPEI in 2009, Dr. Domike was the founding director of a university-wide Center for Entrepreneurship at the College of Wooster in Ohio (funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation).

Over the past twenty years, Dr. Domike has been involved in developing start-up companies in the areas of software; management consulting; industrial water filters; and essential oil extraction. Four of these companies (two on PEI) are now significant with millions of dollars in revenue and dozens of employees each. On PEI, he has worked with dozens of small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs to advance their plans and operations. His current research activities are primarily in collaboration with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Biomedical Innovation (CBI) in the MIT Engineering Systems Division, focused on quantitative assessment of new technologies in pharmaceutical products and manufacturing.

Abstract:

“Dr. Domike recently led a workshop on risk assessment for technology innovation in biomanufacturing. The workshop involved thirty-one colleagues from industry representing nineteen different biopharmaceutical companies (including Pfizer, Amgen, Biogen, Merck) engaged through MIT's Center for Biomedical Innovation.  The workshop was focused on identifying, quantifying, and mitigating risks associated with operating both human and non-human host cell systems in an open manufacturing facility.

The quality risk management (QRM) approach utilized in the workshop aligned with that of the International Council for Harmonisation. It also built upon prior research publications authored by Dr. Domike focused on practically implementing QRM consistent with the FDA’s 21st-century quality initiative. The workflow that was designed and enacted was aligned with best practices in innovation utilized for risky endeavours in high-technology industries (e.g., aerospace, automobile automation). The workflow utilized mapping the manufacturing process, defining the risk question, risk evaluation, and risk control. The workshop outcomes included a completed failure mode and effects analysis that can be used as a guideline during practical implementation of the technology innovation. 

These approaches to QRM and innovation management are relevant to bio-tech companies on PEI, and Dr. Domike has enacted these approaches in some of those PEI companies.

Washing your hands properly is one of the most important things you can do to help prevent and control the spread of many illnesses. Good hand hygiene will reduce the risk of things like flu, COVID-19, food poisoning, and healthcare-associated infections being passed from person to person.

The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre is conducting hand hygiene audits on March 8, 9, and 10. We are asking any patients who visit us on these days to provide us direct observational feedback on our hand hygiene. This helps us to identify gaps or moments where we may not be doing as well as we should so that we can make improvements.

Following the success of our initial allocation, NRC-IRAP has increased UPEI's allocation for the 2021-22 fiscal year. The Office of Commercialization, Industry & Innovation is therefore seeking additional interested researchers. Please contact OCII with any questions.

Program summary: To provide technical advice to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to assist in advancing SME-specific applied research and development challenges that may lead to future collaborations.

Eligible applicants: UPEI Faculty

Available funding: A maximum of $5,000 per project

Guidelines:

  1. Project must initiate a new relationship with an industry partner and have a reasonable potential to lead to future collaborations.
  2. Project must provide scientific and technical advice to an industry aprtner to solve an industry-specific challenge.
  3. Industry partner must be a for-profit SME within Canada that can further develop or implement the technical advice into their operations.
  4. Typically, one project is allowed per faculty member and only one project per industry partner – with the expanded allocation, these limits may be increased to encourage additional partnerships.*

Project Information:

  1. Project duration is a maximum of two months.
  2. Type of activities may include, but are not limited to, prototype testing, laboratory testing, or computer testing.
  3. Eligible expenses are professional fees only.

Application:

  1. Two-page application form must be completed by the industry partner and the faculty member. Faculty members should contact Dr. Herminio Foloni Neto (hfolonineto@upei.ca) to obtain an application.
  2. The completed application form should be emailed to Dr. Neto.
  3. OCII and NRC IRAP will review the application, and the decision on funding will be provided within two weeks. Prior to making any funding decision, NRC-IRAP will contact the industry partner to confirm that the project assists with an industry-specific challenge.
  4. Applications will be accepted until February 28, 2022, or until the funds have been used.
  5. All projects must be completed by March 31, 2022.

Reporting Requirements:

  • A final report is due at end of the project.
  • A copy of the final report should be provided to the industry partner and Synapse.
  • Funding will be issued after the final report has been submitted and funds received from NRC-IRAP.
