UPEI's Faculty of Education is proud to be hosting PEI's inaugural Digital Pedagogy Lab institute from July 13-15, 2016. Faculty, sessionals, graduate students, and staff are welcome at this in-depth exploration of the role and application of digital technologies in teaching. UPEI is also invited to engage in the event via the #digped hashtag and the public keynote by celebrated edtech writer and critic Audrey Watters, 3pm July 13 in McDougall Hall.

#DigPed participants choose between one of two tracks - Networks and Digital Literacies - and work collaboratively in small workshop-style classes. The learning community that participants create together will give educators hands-on experience with key digital tools AND concepts to engage in successful, sustained innovative practice.

UPEI, through Interuniversity Services Incorporated (ISI), has recently partnered with Staples Advantage to offer a convenient and cost-effective solution to order office and stationary supplies. Staples Advantage will now be the direct, preferred supplier for the entire campus while the UPEI Bookstore will focus more on retail services.

As a next step and to facilitate the transition to our new supplier, we request that all UPEI personnel who have signing authority to purchase office supplies and stationary products please complete a Staples Advantage form.  

This form will gather your name, delivery information and all University account(s) you will use to purchase supplies. This will allow Staples Advantage to set up your individual user accounts within their Eway.ca online ordering system. Staples Advantage will deliver directly to your individual campus locations so please ensure the delivery information you provide is the campus location you wish the products to be delivered to.

Staples Advantage will arrange and hold 10- to 15-minute WebEx training session(s) in the coming weeks (location, date and time to be determined) for those who will now be using the new ordering system.

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday June 3 2016. They will be reviewed at the June meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after June 3 will be reviewed at the July meeting. 

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

The UPEI GSA is happy to announce that the call for presentations for the UPEI Multidisciplinary Graduate Research Conference 2016 is now open (https://files.upei.ca/research/gsa/umgrc_call_for_presentations_2016.pdf). We welcome all graduate students from UPEI and across Canada at all stages of your research to submit an abstract. Our theme this year is “Different Ways of Knowing.” The conference will take place August 11–13, 2016 at UPEI.

The UPEI Multidisciplinary Graduate Research Conference (UMGRC) is happy to announce that Rebecca Thomas, Indigenous Poet and Scholar, will be coming to UPEI on August 12 for a keynote presentation.

Where: MacDougall Hall room 242
When: August 12, 9-10 am
Title: Do you see what I see? Can you? Contemporary world-view and perspective through the eyes of an Indigenous poet and scholar.

Speaker Bio: Rebecca Thomas is a Mi'kmaw woman living in Dartmouth Nova Scotia. She is the daughter of a residential school survivor whose family is rooted in Lennox Island First Nation, Prince Edward Island. Rebecca is outspoken when it comes to confronting Aboriginal stereotypes, as well as educating her colleagues and the general public about cultural safety and integrity. Through her work as coordinator for Aboriginal Student Services at the Nova Scotia Community College, and also as a Slam Poet, Rebecca encourages people to think before they speak. Having Captained the Nova Scotia Slam poetry team for the third year in a row she was able to bring her voice, along with three other Nova Scotians, to the national stage. Having been named HRM's most recent Poet Laureate, most of her work focuses on the relationships between Canada's First Peoples, their relationship with the federal government, and how First Nations' people are perceived publicly. Rebecca is on a life long journey to promote understanding and empathy for Indigenous people and marginalized communities.

The Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI will celebrate the achievements of its graduate students and researchers at its 24th annual Graduate Studies and Research Days (GS&R Days) event on Thursday, May 12, and Friday, May 13, in Lecture Theatre A. During the celebration, 20 graduate students and six post-doctoral fellows at AVC will present their research findings. New students will present their research plans. Their presentations cover research topics ranging from terrestrial and aquatic animal health to environmental health and biomedical sciences.

GS&R Days will open on Thursday at 9 a.m., with welcoming remarks from UPEI President and Vice-Chancellor Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, Minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning Richard Brown, and AVC Dean Greg Keefe. Immediately following the opening remarks will be the annual R.G. Thomson Lecture, an endowed lecture honouring AVC’s founding dean, Dr. Reginald Thomson. This year’s R.G. Thomson lecturer, Dr. Dorothee Bienzle will present “Researcher, clinician and teacher: How best to move the veterinary profession forward.” Dr. Bienzle is an internationally recognized professor of pathobiology, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph.

On Friday, May 13, at 9 a.m., Dr. J Trenton McClure, professor of large animal medicine at AVC, will be presented with the 2016 Zoetis Research Excellence Award. He will give a presentation called “So many interests, too little time: A veterinary clinician’s experience in research.”
AVC’s GS&R Days will conclude on Friday with an awards presentation in The McCain Foundation Learning Commons, starting at 12:45 p.m.

All are invited to attend this celebration of AVC’s graduate studies and research program.

Effective Thursday, May 12, 2016, UPEI will be changing its campus phone system service provider from Bell Aliant to Eastlink.

In preparation for the change, upgrades to campus phone equipment will take place on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. An outage is scheduled to commence between 6 - 7 pm and last for approximately 30 minutes. All inbound and outbound phone services on campus will be nonfunctional during this time.

In order to facilitate the service provider transition, phone service may also be disrupted on Thursday May 12, 2016 between 6 - 8 pm for approximately one hour. All inbound and outbound phone services on campus will be nonfunctional during this time.

Although the service provider is changing, the end user will not see any changes to the services they currently have, including phone numbers and voice mail.

This will be a 3 hour training session with handouts, based on CCAC Recommended Syllabus (exam included).

The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course.  (A refresher course is required every 5 years.)

Student Affairs and Counselling Services will be offering Bystander Intervention Training this summer. Bringing in the Bystander uses a community of responsibility model to teach bystanders how to intervene safely and effectively in cases where sexual assault may be occurring or where there may be risk. Its main message is that “Everyone in the community has a role to play in ending sexual violence.” This prevention program emphasizes a bystander intervention approach and assumes that everyone has a role to play in ending violence against women. 

To date UPEI has trained over 270 people!

The first session this summer will be taking place at the end of May, 2016.

The Institute will be held from the evening of July 19th till the evening of July 22nd. The venue is the Stanley Bridge Resort. 

Registration for the workshop is $750.00, tax included. That fee covers all learning materials; all breakfasts and lunches plus two nutrition breaks a day; the Tuesday night reception; and the Friday night barbeque banquet. The fee can be paid by cheque or credit card. There will be an extra charge of $50.00 for each guest you bring to the banquet.
