Tue, Apr 26, 2016 1:00pm to 2:30pm
Atlantic Veterinary College - AVC 286A N
free

The evolving practices and technologies of Digital Humanities bring a plethora of challenges to would-be participants. In this talk, Dr. Michael Newton will discuss some of the experiences of the UNC Digital Innovation Lab around Digital Humanities projects and how they have informed the design decisions behind the data visualization collaboratory Prospect. It will also feature a demonstration of some of the key features and functionalities of Prospect that support the needs of Digital Humanities projects, and an outline of how to create a data set with it.

Dr. Michael Newton has been the lead software developer in the Digital Innovation Lab at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, since late 2013. He has a B.A. in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego, which he earned while working at a popular computer game company. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Celtic Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and has published extensively in that field. In 2007, he was awarded a Digital Humanities Initiative grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (US) to create a digital collaboratory for Celtic Studies. He is currently working on several projects at UNC, most notably the data visualization collaboratory Prospect.

Dr. Newton is the author of Seanchaidh na Coille / The Memory-Keeper of the Forest, published by Cape Breton University Press, which has been shortlisted for the Atlantic Book Award for Scholarly Writing.

ITSS is migrating from Novell Directory Services (NDS) to Microsoft Active Directory Services (AD). This project will be completed by August 26, 2016. This means that your network login to connect to network resources such as departmental printing and shared drives will be changing. In order to do this, ITSS will need to visit your location and modify software and configurations on your computer. We will need you to be available at this time to enter passwords to complete this process. We are estimating this process will take approximately 30-60 minutes to complete on each computer. ITSS is currently drafting a plan to schedule these desk visits and will be communicating with departmental staff to coordinate the date and time for each department migration. As of September 1, anyone wishing to use networked resources will need to have been migrated to the new login. ITSS asks that you please make every effort to be available when your department is scheduled to be migrated so that there isn’t a large number of people needing to be migrated in early September exceeding our capacity to meet those needs. ITSS thanks you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

There will be a complete water shutdown (hot and cold) at Dalton Hall on April 20, 2016, between 8:30 am and 12 pm so that repairs to a leaking tap can be completed.
