As UPEI continues to strengthen internationalization efforts, the UPEI International Relations Office (IRO) would like the help of Faculty and Staff! The IRO has removed the deadline for applications to the International Prospecting Fund and will continue to accept applications until the end of the Fiscal Year (April 30th, 2017) or until the fund is exhausted, whichever comes first. If you have an idea for a proposal please submit it to the IRO for review. As you may be aware, Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (“CUPW”) have been in contracts negotiations since late 2015 to reach a new agreement for about 50,000 workers. CUPW members are expected to have a strike vote sometime this month. If an agreement is not reached, the union estimates a strike or lockout date could come in early July.

In the event of a strike, please be advised of the following:

-UPEI Shipping/Receiving and Mail Services (“SRMS”) will continue to operate.

-Internal mail services will be unaffected.

-Mail destined for the Canada Post mail system will continue to be picked up at offices around campus and taken to SRMS where it will then be stamped and ready for immediate delivery to Canada Post at the conclusion of the labour disruption.

-CAUTION is advised. Should the delivery or your out-going mail be time sensitive you should consider using a courier service.

-At the faculty /department’s request, SRMS can prepare and send items normally shipped in the regular mail system via courier. Please note, as usual, all courier charges will be recovered from the department initiating the shipment.

-As is also the current practice, departments are free to initiate their own deliveries with the courier of their choice. Although significant developments will be provided via UPEI Marketing & Communications, it is the responsibility of each faculty/ department to ensure normal delivery of their mail item by monitoring decisions whether to use courier service or to use Canada post.

There will also be a Meet & Greet in the Education Student Lounge (Memorial 306) from 3:00pm-3:45pm. All are welcome to attend.

Health Assessment-Critical Decision Making for Registered Nurses 
August 15-16, 2016 at UPEI 

This course will focus on assessment of the adult with the content organized around the four main components of health assessment:

  • subjective history
  • objective exam
  • critical analysis of data
  • communication of findings

This two day interactive course provides an opportunity for registered nurses to practice/enhance interview strategies and physical assessment skills (inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation). With a focus on detailed history taking, critical thinking, clinical interpretation, diagnostic reasoning, documentation and communication of clinical findings, registered nursed who wish to expand their health assessment skills will do so with the confidence and capacity required of dynamic work environments. Cost $350.

Hank Kwok, water analysis and purification specialist with Thermo Scientifc, will be offering a pH seminar on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 11:00 am. Seminar topic will include electrode operation and selection, meter calibration and buffer selection, temperature effects on samples and troubleshooting common problems. The seminar will be held in Duffy Research Center room 212 and all are welcome to attend.

Hank will also be available for several pH clinics after the seminar held in labs around campus where he will look at instrumentation and provide some hands on testing of equipment and electrodes. Hank has indicated these clinics would be particularly useful to users attempting to measure pH in the areas of Environmental Science and Foods and Nutrition as their samples are typically more challenging.

Dew computing is a new computing model which appeared after the wide acceptance of cloud computing. While cloud computing uses centralized servers to provide various services, dew computing uses on-premises computers to provide decentralized, cloud-friendly, and collaborative micro services to end-users. Dew computing is an on-premises computer software-hardware organization paradigm in the cloud computing environment, which is complementary to cloud computing. The key features of dew computing are that on-premises computers provide functionality independent of cloud services and they also collaborate with cloud services.
 
Dew computing has just gone through its emerging stage. A few research groups contributed to dew computing from different angles. As an emerging and fast-growing research area, it is necessary to bring researchers in this area together to exchange research progress and to envision the path ahead. The 1st International Workshop on Dew Computing (DEWCOM 2016) is the first-ever conference in this area, and it will shape the future of Dew Computing.

When you are submitting booking requests for events, and you are going to require setup of chairs, tables. staging, etc,  you must allow for setup and removal times as part of your room booking request.

Troy Life & Fire Safety will be performing fire alarm inspections throughout campus beginning Monday, June 20/16. As part of the inspections, there will be testing of alarms, however, there will be an audible notification stating this is a test at the beginning and when the test is completed. The building occupants are not required to evacuate during the testing period. The ringing of alarms is required to test their function and to ensure the speakers work throughout the building. This will be a small portion (up to 2 hours) of the total time they are in the building.
