The Department of Psychology is pleased to present the first candidate for the position of Faculty Member and Associate Director of Clinical Experience for UPEI’s new Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program. Each candidate will give two talks: the first is a simulated classroom presentation about their research and the second will outline their vision for the PsyD at UPEI.

• On Tuesday, March 20 at 5:30 pm, Dr. Raquel Hoersting will present her talk entitled "Cross-Cultural Mobility: Cultural Homelessness, Identity and Adaptation". The presentation will take place in HSB 106.

• On Wednesday, March 21 at 10:30 am, Dr. Raquel Hoersting will present her vision talk entitled "Clinical Training as an Integrative Approach: Service, Scholarly Practice, and Collaboration". The presentation will take place in MCDH 329.

Dr. Don L. Baker, Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia, will give the inaugural lecture in UPEI’s new Asian Studies International Seminar and Korean Studies Speaker Series on Thursday, March 8, 2:30 pm, Faculty Lounge (Room 201), SDU Main Building. He will give a presentation called “From the Mountains into the Cities: The Transformation of Korean Buddhism in the Twentieth Century” on Thursday from 2:30 to 3:45 pm. The storm date for the event is Friday, March 9, 2:30 to 3:45 pm, Room 213, SDU Main Building.

Our hope is to build a culture of care that nurtures and celebrates mental health and wellness of everyone in our UPEI community. The theme of Mental Health Week is ‘Relationships Matter’, encouraging students, staff and faculty to help themselves by connecting and building relationships with others. While this theme links many important messages, we hope to instill the idea that at UPEI, no one is alone — there is always someone who can help.

Our five-day event is jam-packed with a variety of events and sessions that cater to all members of our UPEI community.

Go CODE Girl Day is a hands-on opportunity for girls in Grades 7 to 10 to learn about the exciting world of computer programming and software development. We will introduce and inspire girls with the skills needed to pursue interests in the fastest growing industries of technology, computing and engineering. On April 7, 2018 UPEI SSDE is excited to be a participant in Go CODE Girl Day, which is an initiative that takes place at 20+ universities with Engineering programs across Canada! This one day course offers tools and strategies for dealing constructively with workplace conflict. Through lectures and exercises, participants will:

• Explore self-awareness, in terms of how they personally think about and respond to conflict
• Examine various conflict resolution styles, with an emphasis on resolving workplace conflict through collaboration and cooperation
• Examine the basis of interest-based conflict resolution, learning to distinguish between positions and interests or needs
• Work on active listening skills and on sharing their perspective in a way that emphasizes impact, rather than intent
• Learn how to frame conflict in a way that invites creative problem-solving around needs and interests
• Learn how collaborative strategies can be put into practice by workplace supervisors and managers

In support of UPEI Mental Health Week, Relationships Matter, Robertson Library is presenting My Depression: The Up and Down and Up of It in our Movie Talks series.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has asked UPEI’s Research Services Office and UPEI’s Sociology and Anthropology Department to promote the use of knowledge mobilization (KM) in research at UPEI.

On March 21 and 22, Mr. Steve Jreige, Analyst, Public Health Capacity and Knowledge Management Division, Atlantic Region, PHAC, will be on campus. His areas of interest are (1) Seniors Health and Aging (2) the Built Environment, and (3) Emergency Preparedness and Response.

On March 21, 10 – 11am, Mr. Jreige will provide a campus presentation on KM in the UPEI Faculty Association Lounge, Main Building. He will speak about his role as a Knowledge Mobilization Analyst and how that fits within the PHAC, and discuss the KM program being implemented at PHAC.

On March 21 and 22, he will also MEET WITH any individuals or research teams who wish to:

1) Discuss knowledge mobilization and research findings, and how PHAC can help in the KM process
2) Learn about how KM can be built into a future research project, and how PHAC can help
3) Discuss emerging issues in the three fields of study to which he is assigned
4) Learn more about KM

Join us March 7 at 6:30 pm for a screening of the award winning film, "The Light of the Moon" directed by Jessica M. Thompson and starring Stephanie Beatriz. The trailer can be viewed here.

The film stars Stephanie Beatriz as Bonnie, a woman who was sexually assaulted in New York City and covers a six week period following the assault and deals with the resulting impact on her and the changes in her relationships.

Entrance is by donation. Proceeds will go to the Anderson House and the Chief Mary Bernard Memorial Shelter.

After the film, there will be a moderated panel with various campus and community organization leaders to answer your questions and to lead a discussion on the topic of sexual assault. Confirmed panelists: Michelle Jay (PEI Status of Women), Cybelle Rieger (PEERS Alliance), Treena Smith (UPEI Student Affairs), Daneen MacDonald (Family Violence Prevention Services), and Sigrid Rolfe (PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre).

In collaboration with the Confederation Centre Public Library (CCPL) you now have more choice in what you read!

As of Monday, March 5 the UPEI community can check out current, popular reading materials from the POP-UP PUB.

Although the books come from CCPL, you will check them out and return them to the Service Desk in Robertson Library by using your UPEI Campus Card. Books can be borrowed for three weeks.

Each month there will be a new selection of approximately 50 books.

Availability has just opened for the upcoming ASIST Workshop, taking place tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, March 8 & 9. This training is available free of charge for UPEI's staff, students and faculty.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety.

A new capability in Moodle makes it possible to create scannable paper tests using your Moodle question bank. If you've been using multiple choice tests in your face-to-face class, this can help you save some grading time.
