Dr. H.F. (Gus) Shurvell, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, and Adjunct Professor in the Art Conservation Program, Queen's University, will present a seminar on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 11:00 am. The presentation is entitled "The Technique of X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analysis and Some Current Applications". The seminar will be held in the KC Irving Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 104.

All are welcome!

Hank Kwok, water analysis and purification specialist with Thermo Scientifc, will be offering a pH seminar on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 11:00 am. Seminar topic will include electrode operation and selection, meter calibration and buffer selection, temperature effects on samples and troubleshooting common problems. The seminar will be held in Duffy Research Center room 212 and all are welcome to attend.

Hank will also be available for several pH clinics after the seminar held in labs around campus where he will look at instrumentation and provide some hands on testing of equipment and electrodes. Hank has indicated these clinics would be particularly useful to users attempting to measure pH in the areas of Environmental Science and Foods and Nutrition as their samples are typically more challenging.

If you would be interested in Hank stopping by your lab please let Stephen Scully (sscully@upei.ca) know.

The University has awarded the tender for the AVC Lecture Theatre B & C Renovation to WM & M (1993) Ltd. This project consists of renovating the existing space, which includes flooring, painting, audio visual equipment, millwork, and seating.

Construction will begin on Thursday, June 16, 2016 with an expected completion date of August 19, 2016.

While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable.
Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this exciting renovation project that will enhance the services, facilities and environment provided to students, faculty, staff and University guests.

Students from St. Hilda's School for Girls in Japan will be on campus from July 22 to August 5, 2016 participating in an intensive English language program delivered by the International Relations Office. The IRO has an urgent need for more host families to accommodate the visit as a few hosts have had to cancel.  Hosts will be paid $400 to cover the cost of hosting the students. Please contact Richelle Greathouse at rgreathouse@upei.ca or Amy Palmer at aepalmer@upei.ca for details.

The E-Learning Office is excited to offer some new workshops in the upcoming year for faculty and staff at UPEI. These workshops will run on campus throughout the year which will help faculty and staff increase their understanding of the use of online resources in and out of the classroom. With the help from a student in UNIV 151 (Digital Literacy and Workforce Learning) we have created a survey to better understand what types of workshops the campus community is interested in and to collect feedback on the workshop schedule.

The survey contains 5 questions, with an area for any additional comments. Your participation in the survey will help the E-Learning Office schedule workshops for the upcoming months. We would appreciate faculty and staff input and ideas in what workshops you would like to see available. The workshops will not only benefit you, but also current and future UPEI students.

Thank you for your cooperation with this survey and we look forward to your feedback.

Professor Shaul Mordechai will present a talk entitled:

Vibrational spectroscopy for medical applications:  challenges and feasibility

Abstract

Vibrational spectroscopy and spectral imaging have been established as fast methods for biochemical analysis of cells and tissues. In the present talk we test the efficacy of FTIR microscopy and multivariate analysis for early detection of colon cancer using three different sampling methodologies: tissue sections, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and plasma. The combined technology with advanced multivariate analysis may provide a simple and low cost method for early detection of colorectal cancer and follow up. The peripheral blood test technology after its full development is highly suitable for colorectal cancer screening program in the general population. A comparison of the spectroscopic results with the gold standard methods will be presented.

Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2016
Location: Kelley Memorial, Room 210
Time: 3:00 pm

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Troy Life & Fire Safety will be performing fire alarm inspections throughout campus beginning Monday, June 20/16. As part of the inspections, there will be testing of alarms, however, there will be an audible notification stating this is a test at the beginning and when the test is completed. The building occupants are not required to evacuate during the testing period. The ringing of alarms is required to test their function and to ensure the speakers work throughout the building. This will be a small portion (up to 2 hours) of the total time they are in the building.

The upper section of Parking Lot B will be closed on Tuesday, June 14, 2016. This closure is necessary to allow a crane to use the parking lot to place a new air handling unit on the roof of K.C. Irving Building and remove the old unit.  Facilities Management will relocate two of the jersey barriers that divides the lower section of Lot B, between the designated section and the general parking section, to enable users to access the lower section of Lot B without going through the gate.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Jackie MacPhail at jmacphail@upei.ca or 902-566-6034.

MRJ Construction will begin brick repointing on the north side of Cass Building Wednesday, June 15, 2016. This work will take approximately 4 weeks to complete (weather dependent). The work will begin at the north entrance, which will be closed while the contractor is working directly around the entrance approximately 2 weeks (weather dependent). The entrance will remain accessible for emergency use only. All grinding and dusty work will be completed during the evenings (start time of 4:00pm) and weekends. The windows in the area of the repointing will be covered and remain covered until the contractor has completed the area, this is necessary to keep the dust out of the building.

ITSS will be performing maintenance work on the UPEI network on

Thursday, June 9/16 at 7:00 pm.

Due to connectivity issues on the Bell Aliant end of the internet service, the changeover was not successful last week.

Monday’s postponement of the maintenance work was due to requests received from the campus community that the time of day was not suitable because of events occurring on campus.

While we recognize that scheduling an internet outage at any time of the day is not without disruption, this maintenance window is required.

ITSS regrets any inconvenience that this may cause.

Training is required to carry out these responsibilities:

By ground - A person who handles (see definition below), offers for transport, or transports dangerous goods must: (a) be adequately trained and hold a training certificate; or (b) perform those activities in the presence and under the direct supervision of a person who is adequately trained and who holds a training certificate in accordance with the regulations.

Handling - is defined as loading, unloading, or packing dangerous goods...for the purposes of, in the course of, or following transportation. (Note: it has been clarified that you do not need to have training to unpack dangerous goods that has already been received by Shipping & Receiving. WHMIS/GHS training covers this aspect.)

By air - (IATA regulations): No person may offer or accept dangerous goods for air transport unless those goods are properly classified, documented, certified, packaged, marked, labeled, and in the condition for shipment required by the IATA regulations.
