In recognition of the outstanding performance of our faculty and staff and their dedication to students and community, the annual Presidential Recognition Awards of Merit and 25 Year Service Awards will be presented at this event. 

Please join us on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 2:00 - 4:00pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. 

Training is required to carry out these responsibilities:

By ground - A person who handles (see definition below), offers for transport, or transports dangerous goods must: (a) be adequately trained and hold a training certificate; or (b) perform those activities in the presence and under the direct supervision of a person who is adequately trained and who holds a training certificate in accordance with the regulations.

Handling - is defined as loading, unloading, or packing dangerous goods...for the purposes of, in the course of, or following transportation. (Note: it has been clarified that you do not need to have training to unpack dangerous goods that has already been received by Shipping & Receiving. WHMIS/GHS training covers this aspect.)

By air - (IATA regulations): No person may offer or accept dangerous goods for air transport unless those goods are properly classified, documented, certified, packaged, marked, labeled, and in the condition for shipment required by the IATA regulations. Training is required to carry out these responsibilities.

Please note that there are also specialized courses for Infectious TDG training for Ground and Air which deals specifically with handling biological agents.

Training courses offered will depend on the needs across campus. It is expected that training will be provided by Atlas Compliance in May or June. An Emergency First Aid, CPR & AED Training session will be held on Wednesday, May 25 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in McDougall Hall, Room 328.

If you would like to attend the training session, please pre-register by contacting Angela Deighan at adeighan@upei.ca. Space is limited so please sign up before May 15th. 
 
Please note: This one day course is geared towards admin staff and lower risk areas. There will be a two day course (Standard First Aid) offered later in the year for higher risk areas such as labs, Facility Management, working with animals, etc. 
 
The training session will be covered by the Health and Safety Budget. However, the course fee will be charged to departments of those who sign up and do not attend. If you need to cancel your registration, please contact Angela as soon as possible.

UPEI Athletics & Recreation has some great NEW small group training programs starting in May. Small group training provides more personal attention to training, it's more economical, has variety, camaraderie, support and helps with motivation and adherence. It's helps YOU get results and most importantly it's FUN!!!

Sessions offered two- to three-times per week, a small group of six to eight clients will work with a certified personal trainer, Lyndsey, Kris and Mitch. For details on registration dates, training days/times, etc. please visit www.upei.ca/ar/programs

It's Convocation Week at UPEI! UPEI employees are invited to attend the Convocation exercises on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. The morning ceremony begins at 10:00 am; the afternoon ceremony begins at 2:30 pm. Each ceremony is preceded by a procession of graduates across campus.

Seating is limited due to safety regulations so if staff members would like an invitation, please contact Eileen Kinch at kinch@upei.ca.

All guests must present their invitations in order to be admitted to the Sports Centre. (Graduates can obtain up to five guest invitations at the Office of the Registrar from Monday, May 2 to Friday, May 6, 2016, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.)

Approximately 520 graduates will attend the morning ceremony, while approximately 420 graduates will attend the afternoon ceremony. UPEI will confer honorary Doctor of Laws degrees to three distinguished members of the healthcare field. Dr. Katherine L. Bick and Dr. William D. Stanish will receive honorary degrees in the morning, with Dr. Stanish delivering the Convocation Address. Mr. Ray Murphy will receive an honorary degree during the afternoon ceremony and will address graduates.

Facilities Management will be conducting scheduled maintenance on the power systems for UPEI's data centre on Saturday, May 14 between the hours of 8:00 and 10:00 am. Noontime Yoga class on Tuesday, May 3 at the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre is cancelled. The class will held the following week for the remainder of the year. 

Faculty Recognition Night will be held Wednesday, May 4, beginning at 7:00 p.m. (Reception: with live music, 6:30 p.m.) at the Fox Meadow Golf and Country Club. This event honours the winners of the Hessian Award for Excellence in Teaching, the UPEI Merit Award for Scholarly Achievement, and the Outstanding Service Award as well as those FA Members who are retiring. Tickets are $50.00 each (with a subsidized price of $25.00 for FA members and their guests), and can be pre-ordered at the Faculty Association Office, SDU Main Bldg., Room 315, Ext. 0438. PiYo with Bernadette! Thursdays 12:05 - 12:50 pm. Starting May 19. PIYO is a unique blend of strength training and core conditioning – a perfect combination of Pilates and Yoga set to vibrant music. It is all about energy, power and rhythm. If there is one class that can change your body – THIS IS IT!

Cycle and Core with Bernadette! Tuesdays 4:30 - 5:30 pm. Starting May 17. This 60 minute class combines a cardio cycling workout and strength training for your core. It’s about 35 minutes of cycling followed by 20 minutes of core exercise that target the abs. 

Each program fee: Members $51 + hst; non-members $60 + hst per program for six week program. Pre-Registration is required. Please register at Panther Central, UPEI Sports Centre (902-566-0368).
