The final Island Studies Lecture of the season is Tuesday, May 16, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge, featuring Mauritius native and now Prince Edward Islander, Ms. Ouma Cuniah, speaking about the economic success of her home island, Mauritius. She will explore the drivers behind the economic development of the island, and draw comparisons and parallels with other islands sharing similar history, and with Prince Edward Island.

Ouma has been working at UPEI since July 2015. She holds a master’s degree in Commerce, and as a Chartered Certified Accountant has worked closely with the corporate sector in Mauritius and other neighbouring islands for nearly two decades.

Admission to the lecture is free and everyone is welcome to attend!

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB). The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday June 2, 2017. They will be reviewed at the June meeting.

Please note: The REB does not meet during July or August so protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after June 2 will be held until September for review at the September 2017 meeting.

The Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College will be interviewing three (3) candidates for the open, twelve-month term, lecturer faculty position in radiology & diagnostic imaging. As part of the interview process, each candidate has been asked to present a 50-minute lecture suitable for 3rd year DVM students on the topic of radiation safety. 

• Dr. Colleen Hughes (AVC Class of 2006) will present "The Importance of Radiation Safety in a Veterinary Setting" on Monday, May 15th, 2017 at 12:30pm in AVC Lecture Theatre “B”.
• Dr. Amy Lister-Kasycz (AVC Class of 2012) will present "Don’t Go Into the Light! What you Need to Know About Radiation Safety" on Tuesday, May 16th, 2017 at 12:30pm in AVC Lecture Theatre “B".
• Dr. Jennifer MacLean (AVC Class of 2010) will present "Radiation Safety in Veterinary Medicine" on Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 at 12:30pm in AVC Lecture Theatre “B”.

Jay Naidoo, political and soial activist, has been a leader in the anti-apartheid movement and served as the founding General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions. Mr. Naidoo is author of the book Change: organizing tomorrow, today, which warns: “Unless there is significant change, the world is heading to an explosion. The growing gap between rich and poor is dangerous and unsustainable.”

On Thursday, June 1, Mr. Naidoo will present at UPEI in Irving Chemistry Centre, Room 104, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Naidoo's discussion explores why people are poor when we walk on gold, diamonds, and resources that fuel the global economy; the extent to which the technological revolution has changed the way we live, organize ourselves, and work; and what the future may hold for education, training and jobs.

Please be advised that UPEI is switching all shredding services to ShredGuard/DocGuard. They offer a wide range of services at low prices and are currently the holder of the ISI contract.

We would encourage any departments that have a bag service for shredding at this time to consider going to a console with a lock and key.  There is no rental fee for the console and it keeps your documents secure and confidential until they are shredded on campus by ShredGuard. The console holds one bag and would be picked up monthly for a fee of $5.96 per console per visit. If your department only requires shredding services on an infrequent basis you can call Shredguard or procurement services for a current price list and to schedule a pick up. The Department of Pathology and Microbiology has short listed two candidates for Competition #08A17 (tenure track Anatomic Pathology), Dr. Carolyn Legge and Dr. Melanie Buote. They will deliver a seminar as part of their interview process.

Dr. Legge will deliver her seminar, "A Diagnostic Pathologist’s Approach to Case-based Learning & Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex - Diagnostic Challenges and Potential Opportunities", on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 10:30 am in lecture theatre AVC-A.

UPEI from July 3 to 28, 2017. This summer school is intended for graduate students and promising undergraduates. Each participant is expected to register for at least two of the three courses. Each course consists of three hours lecture sessions per day for two weeks. AARMS and UPEI will provide a certificate indicating course completion and facilitate transfer of credit to students' home university.

Registration and accommodation are free and deadline to apply is May 15, 2017.
