Prerequisites: "C as a Second Language" or prior experience with C programming

A great deal of high-performance computing software is written in C++, but few universities offer courses in the language any more. If you have to work with "legacy code" written in C++, adding features, porting to a new machine, or patching errors, or if you need to extend packages like OpenFOAM which are written in C++, then this workshop is for you.

C++ was designed as an extension of the C language but has its own distinct idiom or style. This workshop assumes that you already know C to the level reached in the ACENET workshop, "C as a Second Language".

This session will take place on:

Thursday, March 18th - 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm (Atlantic time)

You do need to have a laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages.

Participants must register using their institutional / organizational email address (not a personal email, ie. gmail)

Instructions for how to join will be sent out one day prior to the start of the event.

Earlier this week Prime Minister Justin Trudeau designated March 11 a national day of observance to commemorate those who have died from COVID-19. Canada will mark the one-year anniversary of the World Health Organization declaring COVID-19 a global pandemic on Thursday, March 11, 2021.

The government has asked Canadians to think about those whose lives were claimed by the novel coronavirus, as well as the health-care and other essential workers who have been on the front lines.

UPEI will join governments and other organizations across the country in lowering the flags to half-mast as part of this observance.

This webinar session takes a look at the effect that the COVID pandemic has had on key aspects of our health: socialization, nutrition, physical exercise, and sleep.  Our goal is to help you reduce stress levels by providing you with the skills to recognize signs and symptoms of unhealthy coping. We will then work through the process of creating healthy coping mechanisms that can be used in your day to day life.  Presented by Third Year Nursing Students.

Date and Time: March 15th at 10:30 AM

Draw prize:  UPEI Bookstore $50 gift certificate.   Only UPEI staff and faculty eligible for draw.  Please contact Angela Marchbank, Fitness & Wellness Coordinator for the webinar link.

The E-Learning Multimedia Development Grant is being offered for the third time as an opportunity for faculty and staff members to create a multimedia course resource with the help of the E-Learning Instructional Multimedia Specialist.

Find out more about the grant here.

If you have questions related to your multimedia project ideas, please contact Kristy McKinney at kmckinney@upei.ca

Closing date for applications is March 12, 2021 and completed application forms can be sent to dmoses@upei.ca with the subject line “E-Learning Multimedia Development Grant Application 2021.

This year, the University of Prince Edward Island launched the first-ever UPEI Panther Pitch competition as part of the Harry W. MacLauchlan Entrepreneurship Program. In January, twenty-five student teams were chosen to compete for support to develop their ventures. Since the competition launch, these teams have been receiving coaching from experienced mentors and refining their business plan to potentially win a portion of $45,000 in prize money to support their startup ventures.

Six of these teams will be selected to compete in a live semi-final Q & A session from 7:00 to 8:30 pm on March 24, 2021. Each team will present a five-minute pitch and face questions from a judging panel, as well as questions submitted from the online audience.

To mark this important occasion, Wade MacLauchlan, former premier of Prince Edward Island and UPEI president emeritus, will give opening remarks on behalf of the MacLauchlan family.

To attend the semi-final event virtually or to share this event with others, please register at: https://pantherpitch.eventbrite.ca

Are you curious about digital research and tools you could apply to your projects?

Would you like to meet others interested in exploring and using digital tools and techniques, and learn about their experiences?

Beginning on March 12th, ACENET’s Research Consultant at UPEI, Mat Larade, will host an informal and participant-driven lunchtime gathering monthly, on the second Friday. Faculty, research staff, students and industry across all disciplines and experience levels are encouraged to join us for this lunch hour of learning and connecting! Note: The forum will initially be virtual.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss your own challenges and learn about new and established tools for things like computational modelling, data mining, parallel computing, machine learning, creating web platforms and cloud-based shared analysis workspaces, or the myriad of other applications. Each session will begin with a short presentation, followed by Qs&As and open discussion.

Meet others and hear from local researchers and other experts about how they're using these tools, and their experiences along the way. As always, we’re here to help you get started in applying them to your own projects!

First session Friday March 12th, 12:00pm:

Data Management Planning, Nick Rochlin, Co-Chair Portage Network National Training Expert Group.

From students needing to manage their thesis data, to researchers and projects managers grappling with the need to store increasingly large data volumes, and the upcoming Tri-Agencies policy release on Research Data Management, the time is ripe to talk about the benefits, tools and techniques of good data management plans in our inaugural Red Dirt Digital Tools Forum.
