There's still time to nominate a deserving colleague for the Janet Pottie Murray Award for Educational Leadership.   The purpose of the Janet Pottie Murray Award is to encourage excellence in teaching at the University of Prince Edward Island by acknowledging those teachers who exemplify such excellence and who contribute more generally to the improvement of the quality of university teaching. The deadline for nominations is October 31. For a copy of the application guidelines, please write to Gerald at the Faculty Development Office: fdo@upei.ca

There will be a cold water shutdown of the domestic cold water in Steel Building on Tuesday, October 22, beginning at 5:30 pm. This shutdown is necessary to repair a leak in the domestic cold water line within the building. The work is expected to take approximately two (2) hours to complete.

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering invites the campus community to this week's Graduate Research Seminar by Dr. Farhat Abbas, post-doctoral researcher, entitled "Global versus regional modelling for climate change patterns".

This event is Wednesday, October  23 at noon, in the FSDE building, room 212.

Everyone is welcome.

Dr. Malinda S. Smith, professor of political science, and a Provost Fellow EDI Policy, University of Alberta, will give a public talk called “Equity, Diversity, and Decolonization in Higher Education: An Agenda for Change,” on Wednesday, October 23, 4 pm, in AVC Lecture Theatre A. She will talk about her recent research and offer a critical assessment of the status of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) programs and initiatives in Canadian higher education.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Dr. Smith’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Research, the UPEI Faculty Association, and the Diversity and Social Justice Studies program.

In this presentation, we will explore the issues frequently encountered by thesis/dissertation supervisors and their students who are researching and writing in their second language. The presentation focuses on practical strategies, suggestions, and resources (for the supervisor and the student) as recommended by Brian Paltridge and Sue Starfield in their text "Thesis and Dissertation Writing in a Second Language: A Handbook for Supervisors".

Everyone is welcome to attend the 2019 VWR Vendor Show on Friday, October 25 from 10 am to 1:30 pm in the McCain Foundation Learning Commons at the Atlantic Veterinary College.

The Island Lecture Series gets under way October 22, featuring the UPEI students who participated in the International Community Energy Challenge in the Faroe Islands last May. Student teams, comprised of students from universities in Iceland, Norway, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, and Canada, researched, developed, and proposed solutions for community clients while being immersed in the culture of the Faroe Islands.

Please join us to hear students Catherine Kennedy (Environmental Studies), Daniel Wartman (Engineering), Stephanie Arnold (Climate Change), Jane Lillian Mac Isaac (Math), Jordan Torrealba (Engineering), and Ellen Ross (Business), along with their professor, Dr. Anna Demeo (Engineering), talk about their experience.

The Saint Dunstan's University Institute for Christianity and Culture is proud to present a public lecture exploring the complex and timely-issue of short-term housing rentals.  With a low vacancy rate in PEI's urban centres, many properties are being listed as short-term rentals on such websites as Airbnb and VRBO rather than serving as traditional rentals.  Please join us as David Wachsmuth, McGill University, speaks on this important topic.

The Department of Health Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, will be interviewing candidates for the tenure-track faculty position in Large Animal Surgery.  As part of the interview process, each candidate has been asked to present two brief seminars; one suitable for DVM students and the other a presentation of their research.

Our second candidate wil be on-campus October 28th and October 29th, 2019.

Dr. Marco Lopes was born in Brazil where he completed his DVM training and a Masters in Veterinary Medicine. He did a PhD in Veterinary Medical Sciences at Virginia Tech and a Residency in Equine Surgery at the University of Missouri. Dr. Lopes always loved all animals, but, as a vet, he likes to work with large animals and he really loves working as a clinician. Thus, his choice to work mostly with horses instead of farm animals had a lot to do with the higher demand for clinical work in horses (especially more intensive care and complex surgical procedures) than in the other large animals. Besides his main work as a horse veterinarian, he has always worked with ruminants and camelids. Unexpectedly he got a job at a vet school very early in his career and he immediately learned that he loved teaching and research as much as he loved working as a clinician. So he never wanted to leave academia. Dr. Lopes love for nature and being in the wild is his favourite hobby. He also likes to be physically active and he loves running and playing soccer, which helps him stay fit for the physically demanding work as a large animal surgeon.
