Title: What can artificial intelligence (AI) do for salmon and the ocean?
Speaker: Dr. Beibei Jia
Abstract: The ocean provides an irreplaceable environment and critical resources to sustain our life on Earth. We have considerable knowledge of its ecosystem through research and practice across many disciplines. However, the vital interaction of the many components remains largely a mystery that could be addressed with an interdisciplinary approach and framework. Because of its cross-discipline nature, AI could become a platform and pathway to assist in the ecological, sociocultural, and economic assessment of the ocean ecosystem to our enormous benefit.

With the case studies of Canada’s conservation policies of wild salmon, we elaborate on the opportunities and challenges when artificial intelligence is integrated with veterinary medicine and a variety of ocean sciences. We propose to develop an AI application to provide better digitization and prediction analytics for the assessment of Canadian wild salmon conservation policies for integration into veterinary medicine and ocean sciences. Our ambition is to build out our initial success in this area to expand the application of AI for the benefit of numerous other areas in ocean science.

All are welcome to attend!

Your feedback is important to help the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre identify priorities and define its new three-year strategic plan. The centre values quality and excellence, confidentiality, shared responsibility, and safe and ethical care. We want to make sure that we are carrying out these values and that we deliver quality service to students, staff, faculty and families.

We invite you to join our facilitator, Wendy Drake (MRSB) to share feedback about the Centre during a focus group to be held from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm on Thursday, October 17, 2019. During the focus group, participants will be asked to identify what is working well and should continue, areas for improvement, and opportunities for the future. If you are able to attend, please confirm your attendance at mbarrett@upei.ca by October 15, 2019.

Lunch will be provided.

We hope you are able to join us!

The Centre for Veterinary Epidemiological Research (CVER) invites the campus community to a research seminar by Drs. Ian Dohoo & Javier Sanchez entitled: "Mediation Analysis - Dealing with Intervening Variables"

This seminar is on Thursday October 10 at 3:00 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre B, followed by CVER Coffee Social in AVC 343N.

In celebration of UPEI’s 50th anniversary, the University is hosting a series of inspiring talks by alumni from all eight faculties. Speakers will tell their stories of success and how UPEI changed their lives. On Thursday, October 10, at 12:00 pm in Health Sciences Building 105, the Faculty of Nursing welcomes Dr. Christine Cassidy, BScN ‘13, back to campus. Dr. Cassidy is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Dalhousie University. All are welcome, a light lunch will be provided.

Learning is an action that only the student can own and control. As an instructor, what can be done to help support the development of a student's core skills? In this workshop, instructors will learn about three key skills that contribute to more efficient and effective learning. Those skills are how to take quality notes, how to read for learning, and how to study effectively. You can attend this workshop on one of two separate dates: Thursday, October 17th or Wednesday, November 13th. Time is 10:30 to 11:30 am and the location is Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB).  The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday October 25 2019. They will be reviewed at the November meeting.  Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after October 25 will be reviewed at the December 2019 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete forms.

Submit the following:

  • one hard copy of the signed application form and associated documents to Joy Knight at the Office of Academic and Research, 200 Kelley Memorial Building and

Please join us in welcoming Dr. P. Andrew Evans from Queens University as he gives a presentation on "Stereoselective Construction of Challenging C-C Bonds: Total Synthesis of Complex Bioactive Agents".

Abstract: The seminar will describe the development and application of new stereoselective C-C bond forming reactions to the total synthesis of complex bioactive agents. Specifically, it will outline a novel dynamic kinetic resolution of αß-unsaturated aldehydes, the catalytic asymmetric alkylation of homoenolates and the development of a concise, efficient and scalable total synthesis of the complex bioactive sesquiterpene natural product, thapsigargin.

All are welcome to attend!

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering invites the campus community to this week's Graduate research seminar by Dr. Rasha Elshafei, adjunct candidate, entitled "The Moderating role of stakeholder attributes in sustainable development projects".

This event is Wednesday, October 9 at noon in FSDE room 212.

Everyone is welcome.

The Faculty of Education would like to invite all to attend Ian Hogg's public presentation of his MEd research titled: Engaging the Disengaged: A Shop Teacher's Reflection on Project Authenticity.
