The Department of Health Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, will be interviewing candidates for the tenure-track faculty position in Large Animal Surgery.  As part of the interview process, each candidate has been asked to present two brief seminars; one suitable for DVM students and the other a presentation of their research.

Dr. Yvonne Elce went to the Ontario Veterinary College and graduated in 1997. After graduation she went on to an internship in large animal medicine and surgery at Washington State University and then a surgery residency at New Bolton Center. After obtaining diplomate status in ACVS she has worked at several universities and most recently has been the head of the equine referral hospital which is a private practice owned by the University of Bristol.

How is my course going and how am I doing? These are great questions to ask your students throughout your course in order to make minor changes that could have a major impact on overall student learning outcomes. In this workshop you will learn what kinds of questions to ask to help you get the feedback you need from your students. You will also learn how to create an online survey that will make data collection and analysis easier. This workshop will be offered on Wednesday, November 6th from 10:30 to 11:30 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library.  REGISTER

Learners assessing learners is a great way to promote active learning and collaboration as well as deeper content understanding. However, it can also pose a multitude of problems if it is not introduced properly and monitored correctly. This workshop will cover the basics of peer assessment as well as provide examples of peer assessment tools for face-to-face settings as well as online settings. On Friday November 1 at 3pm in HSB 104, Dr. Colleen Macquarrie, Dr. Sobia Ali-Faisal, and Dr. Scott Greer will be speaking (and inviting others to do the same) on "What do we mean by Decolonization and Indigenization: Conversations with Psychologists." 

The UPEI community is saddened by the death of retired professor of physics Earl L. Wonnacott who passed away on Friday, October 18, 2019. In 1998 the Professor Earl Wonnacott Prize in Astronomy was established in his honour. In 2001 he was named a Founder of the University for his contributions to education at UPEI and province-wide. Visitation will take place at Hennessey Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral will be held at Trinity United Church in Charlottetown at 10:30 am on Thursday, October 24, 2019.

The Environmental Studies Book Club Discussion Series and Roberts Library Talks is organizing the discussion “Chernobyl and Beyond: Past, Present and Future of Nuclear Energy.”

The event will start by showing a short video about the Chernobyl accident to reflect on the legacy of this event. We would also like to touch upon the popular HBO miniseries “Chernobyl” and how its release in 2019 may have influenced public awareness about the Chernobyl accident, and more generally, attitudes towards nuclear power. Next, we will move to a more general discussion about the future of nuclear energy in Canada and beyond.

Dr. Yuliya Rashchupkina, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science/School of Climate Change and Adaptation at UPEI, will join the discussion to provide insights about the historical and political contexts of the Chernobyl accident.
