UPEI is partnering with the Canada Games Host Society during the 2023 Canada Winter Games from February 18 to March 5, 2023, and they need volunteers! From scorekeepers and ushers to drivers and bloggers, it will take thousands of people working together to plan and support all the athletic and cultural events during the Games.
UPEI has developed Guidelines for Volunteer Leave for the 2023 Canada Winter Games. UPEI employees who wish to volunteer are eligible to apply for up to 15 hours of paid time off to volunteer for the Games. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The theme this year is "Together we RISE." When we RISE, we Rally in Screening Everyone.
The PEI Breast Screening Program is available to women aged 50-74 who are residents of PEI, do not have a history of breast cancer or a lump/discharge from the nipple, do not have breast implants, and have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months.
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can detect changes in the breast before you can feel them. This can improve your chances of long-term survival from breast cancer.
You can schedule an appointment without a referral from your physician or nurse practitioner by calling 1-888-592-9888.

Black Changemakers is a new CBC series that recognizes Black individuals in Atlantic Canada who are creating positive change, inspiring others, and helping shape the future. The series will spotlight 20 people from Black communities in Atlantic Canada, five from each province.
Nominations are open until November 1, 2022. To learn more or submit a nomination, visit cbc.ca/blackchangemakers.
Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee comprising members from Black communities and CBC staff in Atlantic Canada. Changemakers will be announced in February 2023.
The Internal SoTL Research Grant (ISRG) program supports research pursuits in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) through the funding of fully developed research proposals. Researchers are encouraged to provide high-quality student training opportunities and to propose collaborations with others from different, but complementary, disciplines.
VALUE: up to $1,500 for a two-year term. ISRG proposals for lesser amounts will be considered favourably.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: December 13, 2022, by 4 pm
ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS: Tenured, tenure-track, term and sessional UPEI faculty in Arts, AVC, Business, Education, IKERAS, Nursing, Science, or Sustainable Design Engineering, librarians, and lab instructors who are employed by UPEI at the time of application and for the duration of the award. A professor emeritus or adjunct professor may apply as co-applicant with a tenure/tenure-track UPEI faculty member. Successful applicants must adhere to the Spending Authority Policy. One of the challenges in software development is to integrate different technologies or product stacks efficiently, streamlining development and facilitating collaboration between teams. In this session we will discuss how to work together with Python and MATLAB, thus expanding the possibilities when carrying out data science projects. Highlights include calling Python libraries directly from MATLAB; calling a live MATLAB session from Python; and packaging MATLAB analytics as royalty-free .py libraries.

Through live demonstrations and examples, learn how MATLAB can be used to visualize and analyze data, perform numerical computations, and develop algorithms. Topics will include accessing data from many sources; using interactive tools for iterative exploration, design, and problem solving; automating and capturing your work in easy-to-write scripts and programs; and sharing your results with others by automatically creating reports. This session is designed for those new to MATLAB, or more experienced users, as it will include some tips and tricks.

Canadian author, journalist, and historian Gwynne Dyer will give a public lecture titled “Planetary Maintenance Engineers: A Last-Ditch Climate Rescue Strategy,” on November 3 at 7 pm in the Duffy Science Centre Amphitheatre (Room 135) at UPEI. He will discuss challenges facing the world because of climate change and explore the concept of “geoengineering,” or cooling the planet by artificial means.
Mr. Dyer is a respected London-based independent Canadian journalist, syndicated columnist, and military historian. In 2010 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. His lecture is presented by the Saint Dunstan’s University Board of Governors, in cooperation with the University of Prince Edward Island.

In this certificate program, participants will gain knowledge and practical experience in all key areas of communication, including proper workplace writing, public speaking and presentation skills, blog posts, websites, social media, and other forms of communication essential to functioning and growth in the professional world, as well as in-depth communication plans. This certificate is hybrid in nature – some content is online and asynchronous and some content is in-person. The call for written submissions for the UPEI Arts Review has officially opened! If you would like to see your writing published in Volume XII of the Arts Review, we strongly encourage you to send your creative or academic work to artsreview@upei.ca with a ~200-word abstract to introduce your piece.
The Arts Review provides UPEI students with the opportunity to have their work published during their degree program. Our goal is to see student work strengthened, published, and celebrated. We accept any form of writing — essays, poems, short stories, science papers, scripts, etc.
The deadline to submit is December 21, 2022.
Multiple submissions are allowed. We can't wait to see what you have to offer!
