Dr. Ed MacDonald, professor of history, will give a public lecture titled "Enshrined: Island Tourism and the Confederation Story" on November 15 at 7 pm in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. For over a century, the three staple constants in Prince Edward Island tourism have been our pastoral landscape, Anne of Green Gables, and the Island's claim as the "Birthplace of Confederation." But becoming the "Cradle of Confederation" was not as easy as it sounds, and the story of how Island tourism promoters recognized the tourism potential of that claim and then gradually convinced Canadians that it was both true and important presents a fascinating case study of "site sacralization" and branding in Canada's Garden Province. For this lecture, Dr. MacDonald will draw upon research conducted by him and his co-author, Dr. Alan MacEachern, for their new book, The Summer Trade: A History of Tourism on Prince Edward Island.

All are welcome to attend.

This is a hands-on introductory workshop focused on fostering best practices for data organization in spreadsheets. Participants will learn how to organize their data to prioritize clarity, reproducibility, and interoperability, such that they can seamlessly load their data later into an analysis program. The spreadsheet programs covered will be Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. The examples explored will be from the field of Social Sciences, but the principles are relevant for any discipline that collects data in spreadsheets. No previous experience with spreadsheets or programming is required.

The Campus Peer Support Program is a pilot project funded by Health Canada and jointly managed by the UPEI Department of Student Affairs and the Canadian Mental Health Association - PEI Branch. Based on the principle that the individual with lived experience in substance use and mental health issues can be trained to leverage their experience to help others, the program aims to develop a curriculum, provide training, and offer services to students on campus. If you are a student, or know students who might be interested, you can learn more about peer support from our webpage: https://www.upei.ca/student-affairs/campus-peer-support-program. Those interested in working for the program are encouraged to apply by November 8 via the UPEI HR portal: https://www.upei.ca/hr/competition/req69. Contact James Reddin (jareddin@upei.ca) or Connor Murphy (conmurphy@upei.ca) with any inquiries.

UPEI is partnering with the Canada Games Host Society during the 2023 Canada Winter Games from February 18 to March 5, 2023, and they need volunteers! From scorekeepers and ushers to drivers and bloggers, it will take thousands of people working together to plan and support all the athletic and cultural events during the Games.

UPEI has developed Guidelines for Volunteer Leave for the 2023 Canada Winter Games. UPEI employees who wish to volunteer are eligible to apply for up to 15 hours of paid time off to volunteer for the Games. To learn more and apply to be a volunteer, visit the 2023 Canada Winter Games Volunteer Portal.

Robertson Library will be closed on Remembrance Day, Friday, November 11.

November 5--11 is Veterans’ Week, a week to remember, honour, and thank those who have served and are currently serving Canada in times of war, military conflict, and peace.

The theme for the 2022 Veterans’ Week poster is Service, Courage, and Sacrifice. At home, around the world and across generations.

The First Nations, Inuit, and Métis of Canada have a long and proud tradition of military service to our country. November 8 is National Indigenous Veterans' Day, a day to commemorate and honour the important contributions of Indigenous Peoples in service to Canada.

Every year on Remembrance Day, November 11, Canadians pause in a minute of silence to remember the men and women who serve or have served our country. We remember the more than 2,300,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice.

2022 marks 101 years of the red poppy being officially adopted as a symbol of remembrance for those who served in the First World War. In July 1921, the Great War Veterans’ Association, a forerunner of The Royal Canadian Legion, adopted the poppy as the flower of remembrance.

In 1915, John McCrae, a doctor from Guelph, Ontario, who was serving with the Canadian Artillery, wrote his famous poem In Flanders Fields. The poem continues to be a part of Remembrance Day ceremonies in Canada and other countries throughout the world.

Listen to In Flanders Fields, read by Michael Enright: https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2678580545.

A Mi'kmaw translation by Mi'kmaw linguist Bernie Francis is available at https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1092418627699.

Visit the display in the lobby of the Library for resources that cover topics on this year’s poster theme of Canadians’ Service, Courage, and Sacrifice. Included in the display are materials about Indigenous Peoples who joined the Canadian Armed Forces and fought in foreign lands, and books about women's contributions to Canada's military effort, including women from PEI.

Information and resources about Veterans' Week, National Indigenous Veterans' Day, and Remembrance Day are available on the Veterans Affairs Canada website.
