Elijah Miller and Brinten Comeau named UPEI Athletes of the Year
UPEI’s Department of Athletics and Recreation celebrated the 2022–23 season at the annual UPEI Panther Celebration—Athletic Awards Gala on Thursday, March 30, recognizing outstanding student-athletes who have excelled in sport, the classroom, and the community.
This year, the UPEI Alumni Association’s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year award went to Brinten Comeau of the UPEI Women’s Rugby team. The Male Athlete of the Year is Elijah Miller of the UPEI Men’s Basketball team.

UPEI and CUPE 1870 ratify three-year agreement
The University of Prince Edward Island’s Board of Governors and members of Local 1870 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1870) have approved the three-year tentative agreement that was reached with the assistance of a third-party conciliator on March 14, 2023. CUPE 1870 represents approximately 345 support and administrative employees at UPEI.

PEI health system capacity study being commissioned to integrate UPEI medical students
The University of Prince Edward Island and Health PEI are inviting consultants to submit proposals to assess and analyze PEI’s health system capacity to integrate medical learners from the University of Prince Edward Island’s Faculty of Medicine. The new Faculty, which was announced in October 2021, will be offering a joint doctor of medicine degree with partner Memorial University.
UPEI graduate student receives funding for breast cancer research
Miranda Steeves, a Master of Science student at the University of Prince Edward Island, is working on breast cancer research, with assistance from the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute (BHCRI).
Steeves is a trainee in the Institute’s cancer research training program (CRTP), with $11,900 in funding provided by the Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS) J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI)—Excellence in Cancer Research Fund.
Premier and ministers receive update about UPEI Faculty of Medicine
Premier Dennis King, Health and Wellness Minister Ernie Hudson, and Education and Lifelong Learning Minister Natalie Jameson visited the construction site of the University’s new health education building and health and wellness clinic on February 3, accompanied by UPEI President and Vice-Chancellor Greg Keefe and other University officials.
UPEI Health and Wellness Centre earns Accreditation Primer Award
On January 6, 2023, the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre earned a Primer Award from Accreditation Canada, making it the first university health centre in Canada to achieve this accreditation. The Primer Award is the first step in the journey to full accreditation and ensures that the centre has the fundamentals of safety and quality in place.
UPEI releases new five-year strategic research plan
The University of Prince Edward Island has released a new strategic research plan titled Strategic Research Plan (2023–2028): Roadmap to Research Excellence.
“UPEI has a strong reputation for impactful research and scholarly work that is addressing global challenges,” said Dr. Greg Naterer, vice-president academic and research at UPEI. “The new plan will build upon the University’s upward momentum and commitment to excellence in research.”

7:00 pm: The UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers (14-5-1) play against the Saint Mary’s University Huskies (13-7-0) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. UPEI has won all three games against the Huskies, having outscored them 19-6.
