UPEI Panthers this Week (January 2–8, 2023)

The UPEI Panthers play hockey and basketball at home and away during the week of January 2–8, 2023.

Wednesday, January 4:

The UPEI Women's Hockey Panthers will host an exhibition game at 5:00 pm against the St. Thomas University Tommies at MacLauchlan Arena.

The UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers (12-5-1) will host the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (10-8-0) at 7:00 pm at the Eastlink Centre, 46 Kensington Road, Charlottetown. UPEI owns a 2-1 record against Moncton and have outscored them 8-6.

UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers TJ Shea, Kyle Maksimovich, and Matt Brassard to represent Canada at 2023 FISU Winter World University Games

U SPORTS announced today that 23 student-athletes, including UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers TJ Shea, Kyle Maksimovich, and Matt Brassard, have been selected to play for Team Canada in men’s hockey at the 2023 Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, New York. The 31st edition of the FISU Games is set for January 11–22, with the men’s hockey event running from January 12–22.

Five UPEI Men’s Hockey players and head coach named to U SPORTS all-star team to face off against World Junior athletes

The UPEI Panthers will be well represented when the U SPORTS men’s hockey all-stars compete against Canada’s national junior team selection camp hopefuls this weekend.

This year, U SPORTS has selected players exclusively from Atlantic University Sport (AUS), and five of them play for the Panthers.

UPEI’s Giving Tuesday campaign supports AVC Wildlife Service

The University of Prince Edward Island is participating in Giving Tuesday on November 29, an international day of giving that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

This year’s campaign focuses on raising funds to support the AVC Wildlife Service at UPEI. An anonymous donor has offered to become UPEI’s “Matching Funds Partner” for the campaign. All donations made on Giving Tuesday for the AVC Wildlife Service will be matched up to $10,000, doubling the impact.

UPEI launches literacy and numeracy outreach project with a significant donation from Master Packaging

The UPEI Faculty of Education officially launched an Island-wide literacy and numeracy outreach project on Friday, November 18, 2022.

The project is supported by a generous donation of $750,000 from Master Packaging. In recognition of the company’s support, a plaque will be placed in Memorial Hall, where the Faculty of Education is housed, at the entrance to the educational learning commons, which now includes updated resources made possible through the project. 

UPEI representatives lay wreaths at Remembrance Day service

On Remembrance Day, November 11, people across Canada gathered on the eleventh hour to pay tribute to the veterans who serve their country—past and present.

Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor of UPEI, laid a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the University during the Charlottetown Remembrance Day Ceremony. He was accompanied by Acting/Sub Lt Cedric Stead, an officer with HMCS Queen Charlotte and a political science student at UPEI. The UPEI Student Union executive also laid a wreath. On the campus, the flags were lowered to half-mast.
