The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, originally and still colloquially known as Orange Shirt Day, is a statutory holiday to recognize the legacy of the Canadian Indian residential school system.

Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family, and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters.”  The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools.

A number of events have been taking place on the UPEI campus to commemorate this important day (read more). Below are upcoming events from September 27–30. UPEI students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate, learn more, and wear orange.

The location for the screening is Room 242 in Don and Marion McDougall Hall. It will begin at 6:00 pm and conclude at 8:00 pm, followed by light refreshments.
