President Abd-El-Aziz and members of the Budget Committee will hold a Town Hall in The McCain Foundation Learning Commons at the AVC on Wednesday, March 27, 11:30 am–1:00 pm to present preliminary budget numbers and share strategic planning to date. After considering feedback from colleagues, and receiving confirmation of the provincial operating grant, the Budget Committee will then finalize and present its operating budget to the Finance Committee of the Board and then for consideration to the Board of Governors during the last Board meeting of the academic year—May 9, 2013. Once the 2013–2014 budget is approved by the Board, the University will communicate any necessary changes in tuition and fees, and will notify departments on their budget status for the fiscal year. Your participation in the Town Hall discussion is welcomed and appreciated. *If overflow space is required, a video/audio feed of the meeting will be available in rooms 286N B and C.
The UPEI Wind Symphony will perform its final recital of the academic year this Thursday, March 28 at 7:30 pm in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. Tickets may be purchased at the Music department office or at the door on Thursday evening.
Immigration, refugee, and citizenship policies in Canada have been changing at a fast pace in recent years. Marisa Berry Mendez, of the Canadian Council for Refugees will address new developments in immigration and refugee policy in Canada, making room for a discussion about these important issues which are changing the face of Canadian society. The Institute of Island Studies and Environmental Studies are hosting a noon-hour discussion on Thursday, April 4 for students, staff, and faculty to talk about ongoing concerns around land use on PEI: the quality of our groundwater, the protection of our farmland, and the protection of our coastal areas, to name three concerns. If you live on PEI, your opinion matters. In April the newly formed land-use task force will hold public consultations with Islanders on these issues. This task force wants to speak to the UPEI community about what they think. So let's talk about land use. Free pizza for lunch. “This Shining Night”, the spring choral presentation by UPEI's Concert Choir, takes place in Steel Recital Hall on Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 pm. The audience will be treated to performances by the concert choir, under interim director Pamela Campbell and special guests the Summerside Community Choir and Montague Regional High School Choir. Summerside conductor Mark Ramsay and Montague conductor Christie Beck are both alumni of the UPEI music department. As well as directing their own choirs' performances, Ramsay and Beck will guest-conduct the UPEI choir in Morten Lauridsen's “Sure on This Shining Night” and Leonard Bernstein's “Somewhere”, respectively. Also, appearing as guest conductor of “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day” will be alumnus Michael van der Gaag. A student conductor from the music department's choral techniques class will conduct the university choir in Eric Whitacre's “The Seal Lullaby.” Collaborative pianist for the evening is Jeremy Gallant. UPEI’s basketball-playing profs are inviting all students of UPEI and Holland College (and their alumni) for a fun and competitive 4-on-4 basketball tournament. It will be held on Friday, April 5, from 2:00-5:00. It is for men and women and there will be two divisions, D1 and SS (short but slow). Following the competition, we will proceed to The WAVE for food, prizes and trash-talking. Cost per team is $25. "All-taxa Biodiversity Inventories (ATBI): accounting for all species occurring in a designated area" Date: Tuesday, March 26 Location: The McCain Foundation Learning Commons, AVC (287 North) Time: 10:00 am Dr. Malloch received his BA & MA in biology from San Francisco State University and his PhD from the University of Toronto (taxonomy of cleistothecial ascomycetes). He was Professor at the University of Toronto from 1975-2003. After retirement in 2003, he moved to Little Lepreau, New Brunswick and took a position as Research Associate at the New Brunswick Museum, Saint John. He is also an Emeritus Professor at the University of Toronto and Honorary Research Associate at UNB, serving on two graduate student supervisory committees involving mercury uptake in mycorrhizal fungi and white-nose syndrome in hibernating bats.
