Generous financial contributions to the UPEI Student Food Bank have kept the shelves reasonably stocked since the beginning of the semester. September is a particularly busy month as students pay fees and encounter other expenses. Our Food Bank wish-list includes: canned meats and fish; noodles - pastas, spaghetti, Mr. Noodles, Sidekicks; salt, pepper and other seasonings (garlic, cumin, curry, and coriander); canned vegetables; healthy canned soups - "Chunky" style; and even some treats - granola bars, pudding cups, crackers, and cookies. Our clothing cupboard also needs attention - organizing and sorting. Hats, scarves, mitts, and new socks are always appreciated. Many thanks for your continued support Sister Sue

As syphilis is on the rise on PEI - UPEI's Department of Student Affairs would like to encourage all students, staff, and faculty to be aware of the signs and symptoms of syphilis. If students are experiencing health related issues, they can make an appointment at the Student Health Centre - we encourage staff and faculty to go to their family physicians or walk-in clinics. We are just over three weeks away from welcoming the East Coast Student Leadership Conference to UPEI, which takes place November 7-9. In hosting the event, more UPEI students than ever before have access to this important and exciting leadership summit. Incorporating influential keynote speakers, student-led concurrent sessions, networking, and idea sharing activities, experiential learning and more, ECSLC is an opportunity to provide students with an exceptional leadership experience! However, to offer this experience to as many students as possible, we need your help. We ask you to support the student leader(s) in your area or department by covering the registration cost. Because this event is ‘for-students-by-students,’ registration costs have been kept to a minimum. There is also an opportunity to participate as a professional staff member, and anyone interested is encouraged to do so. If you don’t have any students in your area to sponsor, but you are still interested in supporting, we can connect interested students with you! Many UPEI departments have already registered, or offered to register students, but we still need more! For specific information on the conference program, registration etc., please visit our website eastcoaststudentleaders.ca. The cut-off date for Early Bird Registration is this Friday, October 17. For more information, please contact Keith Lawlor at (902) 566-0568 or kjlawlor@upei.ca.
"Generation Open," a live webcast- kickoff event will take place on Monday, October 20, 4:00-5:00 pm in the Robertson Library, Room 265 (LINC). Join us to view this live webcast, co-hosted by SPARC and the World Bank. Speakers will discuss the importance of students and early career researchers in the transition to Open Access and explore how changes in scholarly publishing affect scholars and researchers at different stages in their careers. "Open Textbooks" In recognition of the value of an open access approach to learning, the UPEI Open Textbooks Working Group has made an interim report available at http://library.upei.ca./sites/library.upei.ca/files/TextbookWG_2014Repo… For additional information see http://library/upei.ca/openaccess or contact Dawn Hooper at dhooper@upei.ca
