Every time we think politics can’t get worse, it sinks to a new low. We complain about the problems, but what is the solution? Join Dr. Gordon MacDonald while he discusses a proposal for a new form of government, Ikanocracy, where decision making is by a dynamic form of weighted direct democracy, and look at the mathematical and computational science behind it.
This lecture will take place Monday, February 27, 3:00 - 3:50 pm in Rm. 246, Don and Marion McDougall Hall.

The February Island Studies Lecture is Thursday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus, featuring Island historian Georges Arsenault, speaking about connections between Prince Edward Island and the Magdalen Islands.
Arsenault has explored links going as far back as 250 years to the pre-Deportation years when Islanders sailed to the Maggies to participate in the walrus hunt. More recently, the connections have been through priests, teachers, and community development projects - as well as students from the Maggies attending UPEI. Georges Arsenault is the author of many publications on Acadian history and folklore, and he was recently made a member of the Order of Canada.
All are welcome to attend!

UPEI Biosafety Refresher Training
- Thursday, February 23, 2017 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in room 237, Kelley Memorial Building
This session is required for those who attended the Basic Biosafety course in 2013 or earlier. It is not a substitute for Basic Biosafety. Topics to be covered include a review of basic biosafety principles, a practical approach to spill cleanup, and an update on what’s new at UPEI in the field of biosafety.

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to graduate students.

Please note: anyone who has not attended a training session since 2013 is required to take the Biosafety Refresher Course.

The PEI History of Medicine Society presents a public talk by Dr. Jean Mitchell, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, at 7:00 pm on March 8 in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge. The talk draws on her 20 years of research in the South Pacific and is entitled "The 'Other War' in the South Pacific (1942-45)" : Malaria, the American Military and Pacific Islanders during the Second World.
In recognition of the outstanding performance and dedication of our faculty and staff, a number of annual awards have been created to acknowledge their efforts and achievements.
Up to 10 Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Faculty, Librarians and Clinical Veterinary Professionals and four Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Staff will be awarded in 2017. These awards will be presented during a Celebration of Colleagues to be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre.
Susan Connolly, Associate Vice-President, Human Resources & Legal, will lead the process and chair the committee to select award recipients.

On February 15 and 17 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm come on down to the W.A. Murphy Student Centre and show your support for the awareness and prevention of family violence. There will be a table set up with purple post-it notes, where you can write a positive message such as, "I'm taking a stand", to show your support. We will have the purple post-it's on display and there will be brochures, posters, awareness ribbons, face tattoos and treats!

We are looking for students, staff, and faculty to volunteer to assist with events during Mental Health Week. We're establishing an initial database and once the events are finalized (snow days have set us a bit behind), we will share the the event sign up sheet with those interested in helping out.
Events run Tues Feb 28 to Friday March 3, with a one day conference as a capstone on Saturday March 4.
