K & D Pratt will be on campus this week in various buildings to re-certify fire extinguishers. They will require access to all labs on campus even if the extinguishers are not due to be re-certified, as they will be installing a fire extinguisher sticker above the extinguishers. We request that everyone please assist them in gaining access where extinguishers exist.

ALL university staff, faculty and students have access to the Tobacco Use Policy survey.

Participants do not need to use gmail to access the survey, but are required to login to the Shibboleth single sign-in service (same as is required to access library research services from off-campus). This step ensures that only participants with an active UPEI account have access to the survey.

Everyone can access the survey at https://goo.gl/Ojpf26 until end of the day on Friday, February 5, 2016. It is also accessible from the Healthy Campus Committee and UPEI Student Union homepages.

Thanks for participating and encouraging others to do the same. The Healthy Campus Committee appreciates your input. If you have any concerns about survey access, please contact the ITSS Help Desk for assistance.

We invite all students, staff and faculty to complete our survey for your chance to win one of three $50.00 Bookstore gift cards. Submission deadline is Friday, February 5th. We appreciate your feedback!

Everyone is welcome.

The Atlantic Association for Research in Mathematical Sciences Collaborative Research Group invites the campus community to a seminar entitled "Sets of sums and sums of sets" that will be livestreamed from Acadia University. The presenter is Dr. Franklin Mendivil, a faculty member in Acadia's Department of Mathematics and Statistics and a member of the AARMS CRG. The live "webinar" will take place on Friday, February 5 at 2:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre B.

Abstract: Given a list of numbers, what do you get when you look at the set of all possible sums of parts of the list? It turns out that many times you get a set with interesting fractal structure. In this talk we will introduce this idea and explore the geometric structure of the resulting set of sums. We will also discuss generalizations to 2D (and higher) and present many examples. This framework of “sumsets” is a nice method.

A reminder that the Senate Committee on the Enhancement of Teaching has a new website and blog: projects.upei.ca/scent.

Every 12 days or so, the blog will reprint an article related to this winter's theme on "academic freedom, pedagogy, and curriculum"--and invites colleagues from across the campus community to read the short piece and comment on it! Let's get a conversation going what is involved in this issue and about how it affects us all in what we do here everyday. The next article will be posted next week.
