Dr. Laura Ross, Pathology and Microbiology will present a seminar called "Mink mortality in Atlantic Canada - A 10 year retrospective study" on Tuesday, March 8 at 3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre C.

Students at UPEI will attempt to gather 1,000 signatures this Friday, recording people’s commitment to the R-Word Pledge. The pledge asks that we use respectful, people-first language that eliminates the word “retard/retarded” from our everyday language.

The R-Word Pledge day is organized by the Applied Human Sciences student society, the Nursing society, and the Best Buddies UPEI chapter. Best Buddies partners students with and without intellectual abilities for one year. Buddies talk, hang out, and build friendship! There are Best Buddies chapters at schools in more than 50 schools around North America.

Look for students with pledge sheets across campus this Friday, March 4, and take the R-Word Pledge!

In recognition of the outstanding performance and dedication of our faculty and staff, a number of annual awards have been created to acknowledge their efforts and achievements. 

Up to 10 Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Faculty, Librarians and Clinical Veterinary Professionals and four Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Staff will be awarded in 2016. These awards will be presented during a Celebration of Colleagues to be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. 

Susan Connolly, Associate Vice President Human Resources & Legal, will lead the process and chair the committee to select award recipients. 

Nominations for both faculty and staff awards close on Friday, April 1, 2016.

UPEI Graduate Studies, along with the UPEI Graduate Students Association and the UPEI Student Union will be hosting a 3MT (3 Minute Thesis) competition this March. This is an open call to any graduate student who would like to participate. First place will receive $200 and a trip to Memorial University to compete in the Regional 3MT competition. Second place will be $100.00 and third place will receive $50.00.

The UPEI 3MT will be Tuesday, March 22 at the Wave.

The UPEI Faculty of Education is honouring the career of Dr. Fiona Walton with a symposium featuring presentations from key researchers and graduate students in the field of Aboriginal education.  Fiona has dedicated her career to the advancement of Aboriginal education in Canada, and we wish to pay tribute to the work she has done.  The symposium takes place Friday, August 26, 2016.  A complete program can be found here.

Respiratory Fit Testing for ½ & full face Air Purifying Respirators (with cartridges) will be offered Friday, March 18, 2016. Location: Memorial Hall, Rm 308.

Respiratory Fit Testing is required annually for anyone who uses a respirator in order to ensure a proper fit. Please book a 30-minute time slot through Angela Deighan in Research Services for both sessions, either by email at adeighan@upei.ca or by phone (902) 628-4308. Individuals must take their respirator or purchase one for the fit testing. As per the CSA Standard, faces must be clean shaven in order to have a respiratory fit test. Note that fit testing and respiratory supplies are departmental costs.

The School of Nursing would like to invite the University community to a research presentation which will be given by Lisa Garland Baird RN MN PhD(c), candidate for a tenure track position in Nursing. Ms. Garland Baird will present "Home Care Case Managers' Integrated Care of Older Adults with Multiple Chronic Conditions: An Institutional Ethnography". The presentation will take place on Friday, March 4 from 1:40-2:20 in Room 213, Main Building.

Azhaar Alsaggaf, PhD student will present a seminar on Wednesday, March 02, 2016 at 12:30 pm. The presentation is entitled "Synthesis and In Vitro Antimicrobial and Anti-Cancer Evaluation of Novel 5,7-Dihydroxy-4-Propyl-2H-Chromene-2-one Derivatives". The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.

  • So You're Going to a Career Fair Workshop? Wednesday, March 2, 12 to 1pm - HSB 104 - This workshop will include strengthening and targeting resumes and cover letters, how to dress and some dos and don'ts for career fair attendees.
  • UPEI Career and Summer Job Fair, Thursday, March 3, 10 am to 2 pm -  Over 20 employers - local and national. Come and connect with potential employers.

PEI Energy Systems needs to replace the domestic hot water exchanger for the original portion of the Atlantic Veterinary College building. This will require a shutdown of domestic hot water in this section of the AVC facility for approximately two hours. They will be doing this work on Monday, February 29, 2016 beginning at 12:00 pm.

Universal Design for Learning Workshop

The campus community is invited to participate in a workshop on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), hosted by the Department of Student Affairs and delivered by Frédéric Fovet. Faculty of Education (Graduate and Certificate Courses) and UDL and Inclusion Consultant (www.implementudl.com); Megan MacKenzie; and Cathy Rose. Universal Design for Learning is a framework to optimize teaching and learning by considering the “why”, “what”, and “how” of learning. As our Accessibility services are nearing capacity and an increasing number of students are using these services, the UDL framework can be used in higher education to address the very pressing need of delivering sustainable, inclusive instruction.

In this workshop, we will explore the UDL framework, discuss how faculty and staff can use UDL to better meet the learning needs of their students, and share some real, simple examples of how UDL principles can be implemented.

The workshop will happen on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 1-3pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge. Refreshments will be served.

February 29 and March 1 - West entrance will be closed, please use south entrance during this time.

March 1, 7:00 am to 1:00 pm - There will be no access to the Recital Hall.

March 7 and 8 - The stairs leading up to the Recital Hall on the south side will be closed, please use west entrance.
