Reflection is the mediator between knowledge and experience and is a vital skill for instructional professionals in order to continuously improve their teaching. In this workshop, participants will be provided with exercises to practice reflection daily over a 30 day period. This is a collaborative learning experience as workshop participants will share between them and comment on their daily reflections. This workshop consists of two face-to-face sessions (July 31 and August 31, 12:00-1:00 PM, Rm 292 Robertson Library) with the remainder of events, occurring between those sessions, online. Register early as space is limited for this workshop. REGISTER

Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, AVC Equine Ambulatory Service, will give a community workshop on Wednesday, July 11, about strangles, a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the upper respiratory system of the horse. The presentation will take place in AVC’s Lecture Theatre A at 7:00 pm.

She will talk about the symptoms of strangles, diagnosis and treatment, and ways to reduce the risk of infection. Last month, several cases of strangles were diagnosed in horses in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI. The bacteria causing the illness is easily transmitted by nose-to-nose contact between horses or from things that come in contact with nasal discharge from a sick horse, such as clothing, hands, or equipment.

Everyone is welcome. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. For more information, call (902) 566-0589.

UPEI will be offering it's next ASIST Workshop on Monday/Tuesday July 23 & 24. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety.

This workshop has a limited capacity, and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please email kjlawlor@upei.ca to request to join the workshop.

The UPEI Faculty Association Office will be closed from Monday, July 16 to Friday, July 27, inclusive. The office will re-open on Monday, July 30.

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB).

Please note: The REB does not meet during July or August so protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are submitted in July and August will be held until September for review at the September 2018 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete forms.

PEI Energy Systems has notified Facilities Management that one of their chillers has broken down. This chiller is one of the chillers that provide cooling for the Atlantic Veterinary College, Robertson Library, Kelley Memorial Building, Duffy Science Centre, Steel Building and the Health Sciences Building.  While there is still cooling provided with the remaining two chillers you may notice that the cooling is not sufficient with the anticipated higher temperatures over the next few days.

PEI Energy Systems is working at the repairs necessary to have the chiller back up and running as quickly as possible.  I will provide an update as soon as we receive more information.

Facilities Management apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Jackie MacPhail at jmacphail@upei.ca or 902-566-6034.
