Due to an unscheduled power shutdown in Don and Marion McDougall Hall at 2 am on Tuesday, June 12, there may be some performance degradation of IT systems between 2 am and 8 am.

With the retirement of Novell network on campus, IT Systems and Services has begun disabling the familiar Novell login screen on computers across campus.

What does this mean for you?

When you first turn on your computer, after you press "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Delete" the screen will look a bit different.

If you still have the Novell software enabled, your login screen will have a red "N" and you will see the "Computer logon only" link below the password field.

Once ITSS disables the Novell client, your login screen will no longer have a red "N" and "Log on to:" field should now read "ADDS".

You will continue to use the same username and password to login as you always have.

There is no change in functionality to your computer once you have logged in. This only changes the way in which you log-in, and only if your computer still has the legacy Novell client software.

UPEI Athletics and Recreation is selling raffle tickets for the chance to win roundtrip airfare for two guests to any regular scheduled WestJet destination.

The tickets are 1 for $10 or 3 for $20. Leigh Read will be selling the tickets in main breezeway of the Robertson Library from 10:30 until 12:00 noon and in the concourse of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Wednesday, June 13.

This is a cash only purchase, the main draw will take place at our panther classic golf day on Thursday, June 21.

Just a reminder: this is the last week to register for the University of Prince Edward Island’s Faculty Development Summer Institute on Active Learning. 

  • The Institute will be held from the evening of July 23 till the evening of July 26.
     
  • The venue is the lovely Stanley Bridge Resort in Stanley Bridge, PEI. The Resort has set aside a block of rooms for workshop participants. You can reserve your room by contacting the resort.
     
  • When you reserve your room, mention that you are a participant in FDSI, and you will get a 10% discount. The Resort asks that you book your room by June 22 at the latest.
     
  • Registration for the workshop will be $800.00 CDN, all taxes and fees included. That fee covers all learning materials; all breakfasts and lunches plus two nutrition breaks a day; the Monday-night reception; and the Thursday-night barbeque banquet. There will be an extra charge of $50.00 for each guest you bring to the banquet. If you are interested in the optional deep-sea fishing expedition, there will also be an extra charge (which you can pay once you have arrived).
     
  • The Resort is a beautiful old Island venue that is not, unfortunately, wheelchair accessible.

The Faculty of Nursing welcomes the campus community to a tenure-track faculty candidate presentation by Dr. Christine Cassidy, titled "Evidence to Action: Linking Research, Teaching and Learning at the Faculty of Nursing".

The presentation will take place on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. in the Health Sciences Building, Room 104.

An upgrade to the UPEI Firewall wil cause a service outage on June 22 and 23.

Systems Affected: Entire UPEI Network (inbound & outbound traffic)

Outage Times: Friday June 22, 08:00 pm - Saturday June 23, 07:00 am

Details: As a precursor to our network revitalization project, ITSS will be performing an upgrade of our campus firewall service. During this 11 hour maintenance window any network traffic entering or leaving the UPEI campus will be affected. Internal network traffic will continue to function normally.

Examples of systems that will only be accessible on Campus:

  • MyUPEI
  • Moodle
  • Medical Records System
  • File and Print services
  • UPEI Website

Examples of systems that will be only accessible off Campus:

  • Google Apps and Gmail
  • Any external websites or systems hosted offsite (i.e. in the cloud)

Registration is now open for the UPEI Department of Music Brass & Woodwind Summer Studios 2018, running June 25-29. This week-long music experience is perfect for motivated young musicians to hone their craft and technique.

It's open to students from Grade 10 to second-year university studying any of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, French horn, and tuba. Troy Life & Fire Safety will be performing the annual fire alarm inspections throughout campus beginning Monday, June 11, 2018. As part of these inspections, there will be testing of alarms. There will be an audible notification stating this is a test at the beginning of testing and again when the testing is completed. The building occupants are not required to evacuate during the testing period. The ringing of alarms is required to test their function and to ensure the speakers work throughout the building. This will be a small portion (up to 2 hours) of the total time they are in the building.

The interdisciplinary Asian Studies Program at UPEI will host an international conference on Asian Studies from June 14 to 15 in Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building.

The conference, Good and Evil in Korean Philosophy, Religion, and Spirituality: Korean Ideas and their Global Implications, will have five panels on several interesting and engaging themes with sixteen prominent and promising scholars from USA, Canada, Korea, and Japan.

The opening keynote speech, “Evil and Theodicy in the Buddhist Tradition,” by Dr. Robert E. Buswell Jr., Irving and Jean Stone, Endowed Chair in Humanities at UCLA, Distinguished Professor of Buddhist Studies, and Founding Director of the Center for Buddhist Studies and the Center for Korean Studies, UCLA.

This conference is hosted and funded by the University of Prince Edward Island and the Korean Studies Project, and co-organized by UPEI’s Asian Studies and the North American Korean Philosophy Association affiliated with American Philosophical Association (APA). On June 12 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, you are invited to join colleagues and industry representatives from across the region for a Chemistry Department Open House. This networking event is intended to highlight available equipment and faculty expertise within the chemistry department and promote collaborations and partnerships with industry.

The event will feature a keynote presentation by Ron Keefe, former CEO and president of BioVectra and Diagnostic Chemicals, and active member of Island Capital Partners, which provides capital and mentorship to early stage businesses.

A networking lunch will be provided for registered attendees followed by tours of the departmental laboratories and equipment.

The University Senate at UPEI recently appointed a University (Chief) Librarian Search Committee, which had its first meeting on May 24.

UPEI Vice President Academic and Research Dr. Robert Gilmour was confirmed as Committee chair at this meeting. The search committee hopes to finalize a job advertisement and detailed position profile for distribution by mid-June: as part of that process, we wish to receive input from as many interested parties as possible on-campus, in the Island library community, and from the Robertson Library team. Any feedback you share will be held in confidence by the Committee, and can be communicated to any one of the committee members individually, or directly to Dr. Gilmour, as Chair (rgilmour@upei.ca / 902-566-0637). It would be appreciated if responses to this initial call for feedback could be received by Friday, June 8.

As another avenue for feedback, the Committee will also be holding an initial "listening session" for interested individuals to speak to us directly: this will be held in Library Computer Lab 312, from 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM on Friday, June 8.

As noted, this is a fairly open-ended call, but given the committee’s current focus, it would be most helpful if you could highlight items that you believe should appear in a position posting. As a “prompt”, you will find below some links to some recent Canadian postings for “head librarian”-type positions.

You should be aware that this will not be the last opportunity to contribute feedback to the committee. Any site visits by candidates will likely include an open presentation, for example, and the committee will certainly be interested in hearing from you again after that. You can also feel free to communicate informally at any time with any member of the search committee, or with Dr. Gilmour: while we must respect the measure of confidentiality inherent in any job search, we will certainly do our best to keep the lines of communication open as we move forward with this important process.
