World Hepatitis Day will be recognized on July 29 at UPEI. The World Hepatitis Alliance estimates there are nearly 330 million people living with Viral Hepatitis; nearly 290 million people are unaware they have it! Unless there is a massive scale-up in screening, diagnosis, and linkage to care, viral hepatitis will continue to spread leading to an estimated 76 million new infections and 18.1 million preventable deaths from viral hepatitis by 2030.

On July 29, drop into the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre or telephone/email to make an appointment to get screened for Hepatitis B and C.  The telephone number is 902-566-0616; email address is:  healthcentre@upei.ca. We can discuss risk factors, answer your questions, and get you screened.

Please bring your PEI Health Card, other provincial health card, or proof of international insurance if you are a student. Click here for more information

Join us at our Library Talks to chat about PEI author Michael Hennessey’s book The Betrayer, a fictionalized account of the crimes leading up to the last hanging to take place on Prince Edward Island, in 1941. Two condemned men are led to the gallows - but was the crime committed by "the third man"?

Meetings will be held on Thursdays @ 3pm in the Early Women Plaza, between Kelley Building and the Chaplaincy Centre. Rain location is in Robertson Library. The introductory meeting will be held on Thursday, July 19th, and meetings will continue weekly until August 23rd.

A limited number of copies of the book are available from the Service Desk in the Library – first come, first served. Check out a copy and join the group. Everyone is welcome!

And, in August, we’ll go on a walking tour of Charlottetown to discover where the gruesome murder took place!

The FSDE invites the UPEI community to attend a special summer research seminar on Soil Health, Carbon Farming and Fixing our Nitrogen Problem.

Dr. David Burton, Professor of Environmental Sciences, Dalhousie University, will be presenting, as part of his research collaborations with Dr. Aitazaz Farooque of the FSDE.

Abstract:
Agriculture is being challenged on multiple fronts to improve it’s environmental footprint - reducing it’s impact on surrounding ecosystems and providing environmental goods and services in addition to traditional role of food production. Potato production in PEI provides an excellent case study to examine how this transition can be achieved.

Fortunately agricultural production systems provide the opportunity not only to “do good” for the neighbours, but also improve our capacity to produce a safe nutritious food product. This requires a rethink of how we do agriculture with greater emphasis on long-term goals of sustainable production. I will discuss three research initiatives that I am involved in to build “Soil Health”, store carbon in agricultural soils and improve nitrogen use efficiency in potato production systems in PEI.

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, August 3 for the August meeting.

Ensure you download the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/research-services/research-certifications/animal-care, use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms (only current forms will be accepted).

Until further notice, ITSS will prioritize fulfilling orders for computers for new employees (who do not have an existing system available to use) and those whose computers are completely non-functional. All other new requests for system upgrades under this program will be held for the time being.

With regards to existing, outstanding requests for computers which have been slated to be replaced under the new Computer Deployment and Replacement process for 2017/2018, IT Systems and Services (ITSS) is receiving quite a number of inquiries regarding the status of individual requests. ITSS thanks you for your patience as we continue working through these requests as quickly as we can (trying to catch up to the demand), with priority being given to new employees (who do not have an existing system available to use) and those whose computers are completely non-functional. As systems are ready ITSS will be contacting you to schedule a time to receive your equipment.

ITSS apologizes for this inconvenience and appreciates your continued support and patience.
