For faculty and instructional staff on the go, there's a new podcast series exploring emerging practices in hybrid teaching in higher education called Teaching Here and There.  It will join the list of other podcasts focused on post-secondary  teaching and learning on the Faculty Supports webpage for the Teaching and Learning Centre.

UPEI Procurement Services is currently taking bids on some used snow removal equipment, a double snowmobile trailer and a truck cap.  

Bids are being accepted in the University's e-tendering portal Bonfire until November 19th, 2021 at 2:00pm.  This portal requires you to register by creating a username and password as your UPEI credentials are not connected to this system. When registering for the Bonfire portal, please put your name in the Vendor Name and Contact Name fields.  You can access the information on this opportunity at the following link:

The Animal Care Committee does not meet in December.  The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions -- new, renewal, or amendment -- is Friday, January 7, 2022 for the January meeting.

Please note that as of June 1, 2020 all animal user protocols must be submitted through UPEI Researcher Portal at https://upei.researchservicesoffice.com/Romeo.Researcher/

For new protocols select ‘applications’ and for renewal or amendment protocols select ‘events’.

To view any UPEI ACC SOPs and Codes of Practice, they can be accessed through myUPEI at https://portal.upei.ca/facultystaff/administrativeservices/AVCAnimalCare/Pages/default.aspx

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month.  The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

An initial list of potential 2021/22 George Coles Bursary recipients will be sent to PEI Student Financial Services for review on Friday, November 12th, 2021. To be included in this initial review, eligible students must ensure that:

  • their Social Insurance Number is on file at UPEI
  • they are registered with a full-time course load in both the 2021 Fall and 2022 Winter terms, as of November 12th, 2021 (unless graduating in the 2021/22 academic year). Please note that only registered, not waitlisted, courses count towards student load. 
  • if graduating in the 2021/22 academic year, they have applied to graduate prior to November 12th, 2021

Approved recipients will have funding applied to their student account in the 2022 Winter term. Any questions relating to this message, or the George Coles Bursary can be directed to scholarships@upei.ca.

Private or incognito browsing can protect you from other members of your household seeing what you have bought for Christmas (which someone here helpfully reminded ITSS is only 7 short weeks away). Private browsing is usually used to help you control the amount of cookies you pick up when on the internet. Cookies are little pieces of data that are collected and intended to make browsing easier by taking you to retail sites you visit often. These can accumulate over time and slow down your browser. Private/incognito browsing gives you control over what cookies websites can retain about you.

Professor Louis Doiron, Director of the Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics programs at UPEI, will give a second virtual presentation about “The Feasibility and Costing of Implementing a Guaranteed Basic Income Program in Canada” on Wednesday, November 10, at 3:00 pm.

The seminar is a repeat of one given by Professor Doiron on October 17 with some additional aspects covered. He will discuss the design, potential challenges, and the cost of implementing a guaranteed basic income program, as well as the impacts of inflation and other trends, which were part of the federal government’s budget in April 2021. He will also discuss the role that actuaries would play in the various stages of implementing such a program should it take place.

Due to campus being closed on Thursday November 11 in honor of Remembrance Day, Financial Services will be moving up the weekly cheque runs by one day. The Accounts Payable deadline for payment processing will be Monday, November 8th at 4 pm.

This is a reminder that the UPEI Biosafety Policy requires that Principal Investigators confirm the security and complete inventory of all biohazardous materials being used or stored. This confirmation is due in November of each year.

Inventory records must be kept up to date throughout the year. Any inventory discrepancies noted during an annual lab inspection may lead to an in depth inventory audit by the Biosafety Committee.

To confirm your inventory is up to date, take the following steps:

1. Access your inventory at http://biosafety.vre3.upei.ca

2. Review your inventory record and update if/as necessary. Confirm the accuracy and your approval of the inventory record by following the steps listed below.

  • Select User Menu (top right of screen) then My account (from the left side of the drop down screen).
  • Click Edit (just below the user name)  
  • Click on Information (on the top right section of the screen).
  • Scroll down this page. Below the box with the phone number, you will notice a box next to I accept. If you have not already done so, please read this section and, if you agree, please check this box.
  • To report your inventory is up to date, please enter the date that you confirm this in the 2020 box.
  • Hit Save! Task completed.

Psychology Honours Information Day

The Psychology Department has recently made a number of significant changes to their Honours program.  This information session will review these changes, particularly focusing on how and when a student applies to the Honours program; also discussed will be what an "Honours degree in Psychology" is, what it entails, past examples of Honours research, as well as a "question and answer" period.  All are welcome!

This zoom presentation provides a high-level overview of how stress and anxiety might impact work. It takes a particular focus on anxiety in the workplace and guides participants through the MHW 3-Gear method of addressing it. A representative from Canadian Mental Health Association will lead the session.
