The UPEI Healthy Campus Committee invites UPEI faculty and staff to sign up for the 100-Day Global Challenge, which will take place from May 27 to September 4, 2020. The challenge is a fun way for faculty and staff to become healthier and happier, even during this time of social distancing. The deadline to register is Thursday, May 7, by 11:00 pm. There is no registration fee. To register, log on to myUPEI and complete the 100-Day Global Challenge registration form found under “UPEI Forms”. As part of the registration process, participants will need to complete a waiver and consent form. If you do not have a team or enough participants for a team, complete the form, and you will be assigned to a team.

The Arts Equity and Inclusion group is not letting a pandemic and physical distancing stop us! Equity and inclusion continue to be important emphases to our work in the university, no matter where or how we’re doing that work. So – let’s meet online and continue our discussions. For our next reading group meeting we’ve selected chapter 4, “Universal Design,” from Academic Ableism: disability and higher education, by Jay Dolmage. The library has the ebook, and we’ve downloaded the chapter into our google folder too: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1C-Kp3Rgic3p4Beu_26WK5h4i0ZD4LZmv?usp=sharing.

We’ll be meeting via Zoom, on Tuesday, May 12, at 11:00am. Please send an email to Andrew Zinck, at azinck@upei.ca so he can add you to his invite list for this event.

Hope to see a lot of you there!

With the increase in quality and quantity of cognitive sciences research over the last few years, what of it can be usefully applied to teaching? This workshop aims to summarize that research on learning and memory and provide instructors with tips for integration into their teaching. Facilitated by the E-Learning Office, this workshop takes place online on Wednesday, May 13th from 10:30 to 11:30 am. REGISTER

The Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development recognizes how important stress reduction and mindfulness is during this challenging time, so we have reduced the cost of our Stress Reduction and Mindfulness in the Workplace course that is starting on May 6th.

This course will provide the tools and knowledge needed to transform the way you manage yourself and balance the demands being thrown your way during this stressful time.

This will be a six-week session starting on Wednesday, May 6. For those who like to be online at a certain time, the course will take place weekly from 9am to 11am starting May 6th.

For those who cannot be online weekly from 9am to 11am, recorded session material will be available to explore at your own pace.

The Stress Reduction and Mindfulness in the Workplace course will be facilitated by Jill Stewart, a Registered Social Worker in Prince Edward Island and the founder and owner of Your Life Design Inc.

The National Day of Mourning, or Workers’ Mourning Day, originated in Canada in 1984 and is now observed annually in over 100 countries around the world on April 28 to honour the memory of those who have died, and pay respect to those who have been adversely affected by life-changing injuries or illnesses in the workplace.

Yesterday, the PEI Federation of Labour laid a wreath of remembrance at the memorial on Richmond Street in Charlottetown but was unable to hold a public ceremony due to COVID-19 restrictions. The University of Prince Edward Island observed the day by flying the flags at half-mast and posting a news story on upei.ca, which was also distributed in the Campus Connector.

A branching scenario is online interactive learning content. It focuses on decision making, a skill that everyone of us has to do well in a variety of ways on a daily basis. A branching scenario begins with some sort of context-specific story with a problem to solve. The learner is given choices and is asked to make one. Each choice has a consequence which is the feedback that helps the learner to understand the value of the decision made. Each consequence produces new challenges and more choices. The result is that learners can practice making decisions and develop skills in a low-stakes environment. Branching scenarios are good lead-ups to clinics or simulations that prepare learners for real-world experiences they will have to face. Facilitated by the E-Learning Office, this webinar will be offered on Wednesday, May 6th from 2 to 3 pm. REGISTER
