The Graduate Studies Committee would like to invite everyone to the MSC ESC Thesis defense for Travis James. His Thesis is titled " Migration patterns of Atlantic Halibut from the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence".

Abstract: The seasonal mobility of Atlantic halibut of the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence was evaluated using pop-up satellite arrival (PSAT) and Floy tags. Atlantic halibut were captured in the coastal waters of Prince Edward Island, Canada; Twenty Atlantic halibut were tagged with 20 PSAT tags and 667 with Floy tags. PSATs were programed to release after approximately one year. Atlantic halibut took either distinct eastern or western migratory coastal migratory routes. Atlantic halibut overwintered in the deepest waters of the Laurentian Channel or along the slope of the Laurentian Channel. Atlantic halibut in the deepest waters of the Laurentian Channel exhibited rapid, ~ 100m depth rises associated with spawning in January to March. Floy and PSAT tagging showed that Atlantic halibut exhibited fidelity to late summer range, with a median distance between capture and recapture locations of 16 km. Out of 123 Floy tag recaptures over five years, only eight Atlantic halibut exhibited dispersive behavior outside of the observed migratory routes. The dispersive fish migrated to the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Scotian Shelf.

The presentation and examination will be presented via a web conference.  Those who wish to “attend” should contact the examination committee chair, Barry Linkletter, at gsc@upei.ca for the information to connect.

Games are compelling for young and old alike. Adding game elements to your course is one way of enhancing your students' engagement and increasing the opportunity to learn. But adding game elements doesn't mean you are making your course into a full blown game. The elements that make good games good can be borrowed and used to aid in your online course's overall pedagogical approach. In this workshop you will learn about basic game elements and how they can be used primarily for your Moodle course page but also for an online environment in general. Facilitated by the E-Learning Office, this workshop will be delivered online and will be offered on Wednesday, May 27th from 10:30 to 11:30 am. REGISTER

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the previously scheduled work for myUPEI (originally May 2nd) and Moodle (originally May 6th) has been re-schedule for Wednesday May 13th. ITSS apologizes for any inconvenience.

Providing content for a course can be easy to do. Figuring out how to explain to students what that content will do to them and for them can be far more challenging. There are numerous ways to describe learning and just as many opinions as to which is best. Are learning targets even necessary? Facilitated by the E-Learning Office, this webinar will take place on Wednesday, May 20th from 10:30 to 11:30 am. REGISTER

Reminder!

Equity and inclusion continue to be important emphases to our work in the university, no matter where or how we’re doing that work -- and the Arts Equity and Inclusion reading group is not letting physical distancing stop us from continuing that conversation. So – we're meeting online -- and sending another reminder so you have time over the weekend to read the chapter. For our next reading group meeting we’ve selected chapter 4, “Universal Design,” from Academic Ableism: disability and higher education, by Jay Dolmage. The library has the ebook, and we’ve downloaded the chapter into our google folder too: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1C-Kp3Rgic3p4Beu_26WK5h4i0ZD4LZmv?usp=sharing.

We’ll be meeting via Zoom, on Tuesday, May 12, at 11:00am. Please send an email to Andrew Zinck, at azinck@upei.ca so he can add you to his invite list for this event.

Hope to see a lot of you there!

The Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO) invites you to check out the evolving resources being added to the upei.ca/svpro website to support survivors and victims of sexual and gender-based violence during this time of social distancing. Eileen is still available to talk, provide referrals/accommodations, safety-plan, navigate reporting options, and facilitate workshops Mon-Fri, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. She can be reached by email: econboy@upeil.ca, phone: 902-213-5298, and Google Meet.

While online learning creates many opportunities to reduce barriers experienced by students with disabilities, it also creates new challenges for accessibility. For example, students with seizure disorders, acquired brain injuries, concussions and migraines may find working on the computer for long periods of time challenging and may require flexible deadlines or due dates. Follow this link to an Online Accessibility Services Check List. You will find helpful resources there.

In order to accommodate UPEI computer classroom and lab software planning for the 2020 fall semester, IT Systems and Services has set a firm deadline of June 1, 2020 for software additions, deletions, or modifications. The June 1 deadline is necessary to allow sufficient time to plan and implement the installation of new and upgraded software, ensuring our students will have the software resources they need. Any requests received after the deadline will be applied in the next round of software updates.

For more information or to view a list of currently installed software to see if they are still required or newer versions are needed, please click here.

If you have any questions, or to submit requests, email Stephen Mahar at smahar@upei.ca.

Teaching Community Conference Follow-Up Session

During the 2019-2020 academic year, we, a group of seven business faculty members (Drs. Chen, Evans, James, Jelley, Mady, Pauley & Wagner), taught in the BBA and MBA programs at the University of Canada, Egypt (UCE). We delivered a wide range of in-person as well as online courses (e.g., entrepreneurship, marketing, organization management, strategy). Collectively reflecting upon this unique teaching experience, we will host this 1-hour “Ask an Expert” follow up session to the UPEI’s 3rd Annual Teaching Community Conference.
