The University of Prince Edward Island community is saddened to learn of the passing of UPEI honorary degree recipient, Keptin John Joe Sark. 

John Joe Sark was the first Island Mi’kmaw graduate of UPEI in 1979 and was awarded an honorary degree in 2005. A Keptin of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council, Dr. Sark was one of the foremost authorities on the Mi'kmaq, leading the way in speaking out against racist attitudes and promoting respect among cultures.

The University extends its condolences to the family and friends of Keptin John Joe Sark, LLD. The flags near Kelley Memorial Building will be lowered to half-mast in his memory.

The Faculty of Arts is pleased to present the second event in this year's ConneXions Series. Join Dr. Lisa Chilton (Department of History and Classics), Dr. Yuliya Rashchupkina (Department of Political Science), and Dr. Jason Stevens (Department of Economics) for a lively panel discussion entitled "Ukraine Invaded: A View From Canada." This event will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, 2:30-3:30 pm in SDU Main Building Rm 211.

The ConneXions Series aims to foster understanding of the role that the liberal arts play in the construction of knowledge and ways of knowing, and in making sense of the complexities of the world around us.

Students with classes scheduled in PAC should use the south entrance of the building, which is the entrance closest to Blanchard Hall and Blaze Pizza as marked on the campus map. 

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, February 3, for the February meeting.

For new protocols, select "applications," and for renewal or amendment protocols, select "events."

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

There will be a supervisor training session on January 25, 2023, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm in the John and Regis Duffy Research Centre (DRC), Room 212.

UPEI is the first university in the country to launch "I'm Ready," a project working to eradicate HIV in Canada.

The study is sharing HIV self-testing kits and asking questions from the people who will use them so they can learn how to improve HIV testing and care in Canada.  Participation in "I'm Ready" is anonymous, and you control your own pathway through the program. Watch this video for more information on how to perform a self-test for HIV.

Test kits can be picked up from the registered nurse at the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre, W.A. Murphy Student Centre (second floor).

It's a New Year, but here is an old message from ITSS.

Set your personal accounts up with multi-factor authentication (MFA), which adds another layer of security to your information. It consists of something you only know (such as an answer to a question), something you have (your smartphone), or something that identifies you as a person (fingerprint, voice pattern, or facial scan). MFA is especially important for your email, and your banking and social media accounts. 

The Microsoft Authenticator app we use at UPEI can be used for your other accounts to simplify things. The authenticator generates one-time passcodes every 30 seconds. The code expires after half a minute, so if someone manages to get it, it will not work after that time has passed.

Newfoundland and Labrador is a global leader in the development of renewable energy. However, the electricity-generation mix differs dramatically in remote and Indigenous communities throughout the province, which remain almost exclusively reliant on diesel fuel, resulting in numerous energy inequities. While sustainable energies are often promoted for these isolated villages, emerging research demonstrates detrimental socio-economic and livelihood implications which emerge when development is led by outsiders or corporate interests.

This presentation will focus on an 8+ year community-based research partnership between Dr. Nick Mercer and the NunatuKavut Inuit community of Black Tickle, located on the subarctic tundra Island of Ponds, in southern Labrador. The research focuses on identifying and addressing community needs, integrating local knowledge and sustainability values, and mobilizing community-led initiatives to enhance island energy resilience.

Overview: Project management is a core competency in our rapidly changing environment. This certificate discusses and evaluates what is a project, what defines success, management of stakeholders, communication, leadership, project lifecycles, risk, budgets, and schedules. The program emphasizes agile and change management skills, which are important in today’s project environment. At the certificate completion, participants will have the confidence and ability to plan, manage, and complete almost any project size.

To provide additional security to your UPEI account, Microsoft has changed the way multi-factor authentication (MFA) approvals occur in their authenticator app. This change involves moving to a number-matching approach rather than a generic “tap” approval. This specific activity will help reduce the risk of a cyber threat actor gaining access to your account using a technique called “MFA fatigue.” MFA fatigue, also known as “push bombing,” occurs when a cyber threat actor bombards a person with nonstop notifications until the person either approves the request by accident or out of annoyance.

Does this change impact me?

Any faculty, staff, or students currently using the Microsoft authenticator app as a registered MFA method will be affected.

Anyone currently using an Apple watch for approval notifications will need to use their phones when this change occurs.

Any other method such as a non-Microsoft authenticator app, phone number, or hardware token will not be affected by this change.

How does this impact me?

When you are faced with an authentication challenge, the challenge message will contain a number that will then need to be entered into the approval notification on your mobile device. Depending on the UPEI service you are logging into, you may also notice contextual information including the application being accessed and a map location from which the sign-in attempt originated. This information is provided to help you further determine whether it is indeed your activity that is prompting the challenge or not.

Do I have to do anything to prepare for this change?

This change will require the latest version of the Microsoft authenticator app. Visit Google Play or the Apple App Store to ensure you have the latest version installed.

When will this change occur?

This change will occur on January 24, 2023, along with the rollout of MFA for students.

Will this change require me to log in more often?

No. UPEI’s single sign-on service is still utilized, reducing the number of times you are prompted to sign in from within the same web browser or on the same device.

The UPEI Sports Centre has a variety of specialty fitness classes and small group training beginning in early January. Specialty classes include yoga, kettlebell, and pilates. Small group training options are available for early mornings, noon, or after work.
