Study & Stay PEI: We're excited to launch another program called Student to Professional for 75 international students from the University of Prince Edward Island, Holland College, and Collège de l'Île. The application will close today at 4 pm! Please click on https://lnkd.in/giXvQAut to find out more and apply today!

The Student to Professional program (January-May 2023) is a scaled-down version of our comprehensive Study & Stay PEI program. There will be several skill development workshops, networking opportunities, and social events. This program combines in-person and online sessions. The deadline to submit the application is January 6 at 4:00 pm, or when we receive 75 qualified applications (whichever comes first)!

The Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries (CAAL) is pleased to announce that the AtlanticOER Development Grants (https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca/grants/) 2023 cycle is now open for applications.  AtlanticOER Development Grants are intended to encourage and support educators in the Atlantic region in the adaptation, adoption, creation, and curation of open educational resources (OER), and to increase access to course materials for students.

Each grant is for up to $2,000 and is awarded to individuals, departments, groups, or institutions in the Atlantic provinces to help achieve the following objectives:

  • Support the creation or adaptation of open textbooks and ancillary materials, such as lab manuals, PowerPoint slides, quiz banks, images, and other digital study or interactive aids;
  • Create a variety of OERs developed for use by educators and students in credit-bearing courses;
  • Establish supportive events for the development of content for OERs, such as sprints (a collaborative in-person or virtual event to create or adapt an open textbook or ancillary resources); or
  • Distribute funds to maximize the direct benefit to a wide range of student learners and inquiry across a diversity of disciplines

Please note that for this funding cycle, grants will be awarded solely for textbooks and ancillary materials hosted on a Pressbooks Network. Priority will be given to textbooks or ancillary materials for undergraduate courses, for larger classes, in faculties with generally higher course costs, and in faculties underserviced by OERs.

The deadline for application is January 27, 2023.

The UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment department (HSE) is offering Standard and Emergency First Aid/CPR training sessions:

This comprehensive two-day course offers first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need enhanced training as a work requirement (high-risk areas such as labs).

The cost of registration will be covered by HSE for all UPEI faculty and staff, including students who require training for on-campus employment. Students who do not require training for on-campus employment are welcome to attend; however, the cost of registration will not be covered. Please note that lunch will not be provided.

To provide additional security to your UPEI account, Microsoft has changed the way multi-factor authentication (MFA) approvals occur in their authenticator app. This change involves moving to a number-matching approach rather than a generic “tap” approval. This specific activity will help reduce the risk of a cyber threat actor gaining access to your account using a technique called “MFA fatigue.” MFA fatigue, also known as “push bombing,” occurs when a cyber threat actor bombards a person with nonstop notifications until the person either approves the request by accident or out of annoyance.

Does this change impact me?

Any faculty, staff, or students currently using the Microsoft authenticator app as a registered MFA method will be affected.

Anyone currently using an Apple watch for approval notifications will need to use their phones when this change occurs.

Any other method such as a non-Microsoft authenticator app, phone number, or hardware token will not be affected by this change.

How does this impact me?

When you are faced with an authentication challenge, the challenge message will contain a number that will then need to be entered into the approval notification on your mobile device. Depending on the UPEI service you are logging into, you may also notice contextual information including the application being accessed and a map location from which the sign-in attempt originated. This information is provided to help you further determine whether it is indeed your activity that is prompting the challenge or not.

Do I have to do anything to prepare for this change?

This change will require the latest version of the Microsoft authenticator app. Visit Google Play or the Apple App Store to ensure you have the latest version installed.

When will this change occur?

This change will occur on January 24, 2023, along with the rollout of MFA for students.

Will this change require me to log in more often?

No. UPEI’s single sign-on service is still utilized, reducing the number of times you are prompted to sign in from within the same web browser or on the same device.

If you require additional assistance or have further questions, contact the ITSS Help Desk at helpdesk@upei.ca or (902) 566-0465.

Daniel Muasya, PhD candidate in epidemiology, will defend his doctoral thesis, “Bovine viral diarrhoea testing and vaccination on smallholder dairy farms in Kenya,” on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. He will give a public seminar at 11 am on January 4 in Room 287N, Atlantic Veterinary College. Those interested in attending the seminar may do so in person or virtually at https://upei.zoom.us/j/67889372989?pwd=YkZNNjBObk1EZkVlMC9VQjhLTGFUQT09. An examination will follow in the AVC Dean’s Boardroom.

Abstract:

Smallholder dairy (SHD) farming is a critical sector supporting millions of households' income in rural Kenya. The sector is faced with numerous challenges, among which are diagnosis and prevention of diseases such as Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD). This study had the following primary objectives: to determine possible antigen and antibody cross-reactivity between BVDV and classical swine fever virus using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay among SHD cattle, and to determine associations between disease occurrence and multivalent BVD vaccination on Kenyan SHD farms.

UPEI is the first university in the country to launch "I'm Ready," a project working to eradicate HIV in Canada.

The study is sharing HIV self-testing kits and asking questions from the people who will use them so they can learn how to improve HIV testing and care in Canada.  Participation in "I'm Ready" is anonymous, and you control your own pathway through the program. Watch this video for more information on how to perform a self-test for HIV.

Test kits can be picked up from the registered nurse at the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre, W.A. Murphy Student Centre (second floor).
