Students in the University 203 class are working on a service learning project to increase awareness of student engagement at UPEI. The group is collecting stories from students, staff, and faculty about their personal experiences in student engagement. Michel Arsenault, Department of Biomedical Sciences will present a seminar called "Understanding the Role of Sox4 in Kidney Development" on Tuesday, November 19 at 3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Everyone is welcome.
A major concern of horse owners, colic is a common disorder of the equine digestive system, resulting in abdominal discomfort and often severe pain. It is likely that most horses will have an episode at some time in their life. On Tuesday, November 19, 7:00–8:30 pm, Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, Equine Ambulatory Service, Atlantic Veterinary College, will share her knowledge about this painful and potentially deadly condition in horses. She will present information about the different types of colic, recognition of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, and reduction of risk of the illness. The event will take place in AVC Lecture Theatre A. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Donations to the AVC Friends and Family gratefully accepted. Respiratory Protection Training will be offered by Larry Koughan of All-Tech Environmental Services on Tuesday, November 19 from 9:00-11:00 am in Andrew Hall 142. This session will provide information regarding the care, selection, and use of respirators. Whether you currently have a respirator or if you think you may need one for certain work tasks, then you should attend this session (annually). This is also an important educational opportunity for those who supervise work involving individuals who may need respiratory protection. There is no cost to attend this training as it is covered by the Health and Safety budget. To register for the training session, please contact Lacey Myers at ljmyers@upei.ca or 566-0605. To view the Respiratory Protection Program please see Section 4.9 in the UPEI Laboratory Safety Manual. http://hr.upei.ca/lab-safety. Prior to using a respirator, individuals are required to complete a UPEI Respirator User Screening Form and send it to HR. This form is located at the above link under "Appendices" (App.T, p.113-115).
On Friday, November 15 the UPEI Women's Hockey Team host the Dalhousie Tigers at the MacLauchlan Arena, game time 7:00 pm. The Panthers will reveal their new look and will be accepting donations to the Food Bank. Panther fans dropping off food or making a donation will receive ballots for a chance to win great prizes. There will also be a bake sale with proceeds going to the Food Bank.

The recent UPEI blood donor clinic held on November 12 was a noteworthy success. Many members of the UPEI community attended, with great participation by students from Residence, the AVC, and Nursing program. Special thanks to members of the Prince Edward Island Regiment who attended in honor of Remembrance Day. Just a reminder that the next UPEI clinic is scheduled for January 30, 2014.
