Onyx the beagle is available for adoption and is anxiously waiting for his forever home. He is 4-years-old, fully vaccinated, and neutered. Onyx is a very sweet boy and gets along really well with the other beagles. Unfortunately, he has shown some aggression to one other breed of dog. For this reason, it is recommended he goes to a household without any other pets.

If you or someone you know might be interested in working with this little guy please contact Melissa Hamel at (902) 218-0514 or mhamel@upei.ca.

Join us Tuesday, June 6 at 2 pm in Schurman Market Square of UPEI’s Don and Marion McDougall Hall to celebrate the recipients of the 2017 Katherine Schultz Research Recognition Awards.

The Katherine Schultz Research Recognition Awards were created out of a gift received from Dr. Schultz, UPEI’s first Vice-President Research. Under her tenure from 2001 to 2012, UPEI enjoyed a seven-fold increase in research funding and intensity. The awards go to a UPEIFA member, staff member, or volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the research enterprise at UPEI.

This year, two recipients have been selected. Leslie Cudmore, research grants coordinator, and Dr. Pedro Quijon, associate professor in the Department of Biology, will be recognized for their work to help promote the community of research and discovery at UPEI.

 A small reception will follow.

This is a reminder that all staff and faculty are required to attend one of the Health & Safety Education sessions being offered. The session is about an hour in length. Those who attended a Supervisor Health & Safety session in February/March, do not need to attend another session.

Sending commercial messages is regulated by Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). CASL came into effect in 2014 with a three year grace period when organizations could rely on implied consent in many situations. The rules around consent change on July 1, 2017. Time is running out to obtain express consent so you can continue to send commercial messages. If you are sending emails out to a mailing list, you should consider whether there is any commercial content, and whether you have consent to send those emails. An example of a commercial message would be promoting programs run by non-University organizations.

The potential consequences for non-compliance are serious, including fines of up to $10 million.

For more examples, information about CASL, and details about how it applies to UPEI check here. If you are still unsure, contact the Chief Access to Information and Privacy Officer at pjwheatley@upei.ca

The newest edition of the UPEI Health, Safety and Environment Policy was approved by the Board of Governors in May 2017.

Please take a moment to review this policy at: http://www.upei.ca/policy/adm/hrd/ohs/0001

The most notable changes from the previous Health and Safety policy are:
1. Title Change: The current title includes the term “Environment”, to ensure everyone that works, studies or visits UPEI understands our commitment and expectation for environmental stewardship: our responsible use and protection of the environment.
2. The length was reduced from 9 pages down to 3 pages by removing procedural and compliance expectations that are covered in other health and safety documentation.
3. Includes definitions of specific terms that assist with understanding the policy.
4. Clarifies responsibilities of all UPEI workplace stakeholders.

If you have any questions about this policy, please contact Kevin Robinson, Health & Safety Manager, at 902-566-0516 or by email kjrobinson@upei.ca
