Increased global mobility has allowed more and more students to pursue graduate education overseas, and many are engaged in community-based learning (CBL) through formal or informal educational opportunities.

Based on a mixed-methods case study conducted in the context of UPEI's M.Ed with Global Perspectives Program, the presentation shares the impact of CBL on international students’ academic, sociocultural, personal, and professional development and discusses the benefits and challenges unique to international students in community-based learning.

Members of the campus community are invited to join Ashok Somalraju for the presentation of a PhD Thesis Defense on "Potato Germplasm Development through EMS- Mutagenesis and Crop Bio-Fortification for Enhanced Plant Defense and Nutritional Quality."

The Healthy Campus Committee is providing a 45 minute class that offers meditation and gentle yoga stretches. The meditation segment of the class creates more calm, inner peace and balance that benefits both your emotional wellbeing and overall health.This is a class for all fitness levels. The class will be held on Thursdays at 12:30 pm - 1:15pm.   Yoga Instructor: Pam Harris. The classes will be held in 4 week blocks.   First Rotation: September 19 - October 10.  Second Rotation: October 17 - November 7. Third Rotation November 14 - December 5. Its free but pre-registration required and individuals will be put on wait lists. The next talk in the Franklin (Frank) Pigot Memorial Lecture Series at UPEI will explore how the spirit of the 1960s shaped the University. On Thursday, September 26, Dr. Alan MacEachern will present “A Child of the ’60s: Creating the University of Prince Edward Island” at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building. 

The PEI government began pressing for a single Island university in the spring of 1968. By spring 1970, UPEI was not merely up and running, but was holding its first graduation. The whirlwind nature of UPEI’s founding—with long-term decisions made in the very short-term—meant the new university was a product of its time: a time of visionary planning and respect for tradition, of religious authority and rising secularism, of student alienation and student power.

As part of UPEI’s 50th anniversary, the Robertson Library is presenting a lecture series to celebrate the historical roots of higher education on Prince Edward Island and its future. The series is named after educator Frank Pigot, honoured as a UPEI Founder for his work building the Library’s PEI Collection and University Archives. 

Dr. Alan MacEachern is the author of Utopian U: The Founding of the University of Prince Edward Island, 1968–1970. He is a professor of history at Western University.

The UPEI Department of Music Recital Series begins its 2019-2020 season on Saturday, September 14 at 7:30 pm at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall featuring its new piano professor, Magdalena von Eccher, in collaboration with clarinettist Karem J. Simon. 

The program will feature a diverse collection of chamber works for piano and clarinet. It will begin with “Five Bagatelles” by English composer Gerald Finzi. These were completed over a five-year period during World War II and are among his most famous works. Finzi aptly brings out the expressive and technical qualities of the clarinet. Following will be a performance of Brahms’ Sonata for Piano and Violin Op. 100, No. 2 (transcribed for clarinet). This is a lyrical and virtuosic work in which Brahms’ considerable craftsmanship as a composer is on full display. Francis Poulenc’s Sonata dates from 1962 and was commissioned by jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman, who, with Leonard Bernstein, gave its premier in 1963. The program’s finale will be James David’s Historias y Danzas, a composition commissioned by Dr. Simon. It is an engaging collection of short works inspired by Latino culture.

Tickets for this performance $25 Adults & $15 Students may be acquired at the admissions desk prior to the performance.

Sit back, relax, and watch some scenes from the Realizations play written and directed by two former UPEI students: Kandace Hagen and Rory Starkman, followed by an interesting “Talk back” about the play moderated by our own SV-PRO! This play touches on the topics of consent, heteronormativity, sexual orientation, rape culture and many other relevant topics to University life!

The Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island will hold its 31st annual Open House on Saturday, September 28, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Members of the public are invited to attend this free and fun family event where they can see all kinds of demonstrations and exhibits.  View a painted horse and cow;  see different dog breeds during the Parade of Dog Breeds; visit some farm animals;  learn how to dress for surgery, and much more. Children can bring their most loved stuffed toys for a check-up and treatment at the Teddy Bear Clinic. And they can have their faces painted and choose their favourite balloon animal. 

Organized and run by AVC students, AVC Open House is one of the largest, most successful open houses in Atlantic Canada. The event is one of many activities taking place during Homecoming Weekend (upei.ca/alumni/homecoming), celebrating UPEI’s 50th Anniversary, September 25-28.

The 2019 Volunteer fair will be held today, Wednesday, September 11 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the W. A. Murphy Student Centre, McMillan Hall. 

The annual UPEI Volunteer Fair welcomes local organizations who are seeking volunteers to campus, so they can engage with students and recruit new volunteers. This year's fair has sold out with over 30 organizations seeking student volunteers. Please help us encourage students to attend and start volunteering. It's a great way to gain valuable work experience, learn new skills and connect with the community.
