PEI/Atlantic Book Awards -- Non-fiction Panel
As part of the Festival preceding the combined gala for the PEI Book Awards and the Atlantic Book Awards May 21, there will be a panel discussion by non-fiction nominees John Flood – editor (The Master’s Wife: The Book and the Place), Earle Lockerby (Diaries of the Acadian Deportations, No. 1: Jeremiah Bancroft at Fort Beauséjour and Grand-Pré) and Pan Wendt (Lionel F. Celebration of Island Studies
The Office of the Vice-President Academic invites you to a "Celebration of Island Studies" on Wednesday, May 21, from 3:00-4:30 pm in the Faculty Lounge, Main Building.
Join us at an informal reception to celebrate Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island that will pay tribute to the work of the Institute of Island Studies and recognize the contributions of its past Director, Irene Novaczek.
R.G. Thomson Lecture
The R.G. Thomson Lecture is an endowed annual lecture that honours AVC's founding dean. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Jonna Mazet, University of California, Davis. Dr. Mazet's lecture, "Rising to the Research Challenge: new approaches for identifying emerging infectious diseases and mitigating their spread," will be held on Thursday, May 15 at 9:20 a.m. in Lecture Theatre A.
AVC Graduate Studies and Research Days
In celebration of the graduate studies program, will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16, 2014, in AVC's Lecture Theatre A.
Students will present their recent research findings (or their research plans if they are new students) in animal health research, fish health and marine research and biomedical science and human health research. An awards ceremony will follow.
The Prince Edward Island Premier Who Rocked the Cradle Book Launch

Announcement of new Tier 1 Canada Research Chair
The Honourable Gail Shea, Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, will be at UPEI on Wednesday, May 21 at 11:00 am to announce the creation and awarding of a new Tier 1 Canada Research Chair, held by Dr. Kate Tilleczek.
The event will be held in the Credit Union Day Lounge of UPEI’s W.A. Murphy Student Centre. A brief reception will follow. All are welcome.
Vice-President Academic Presentation by Dr. Lacroix
Over the past several months, the search committee for the Vice-President Academic has received and considered expressions of interest and supporting documents from potential candidates for the position.
A number of outstanding candidates proceeded to the interview process. As a result, two candidates have been selected by the committee to deliver public presentations to campus. Both presentations will be held in Lecture Theatre A of the Atlantic Veterinary College. Each 20-minute presentation will be followed by an opportunity for questions from the audience.
Dr. Christian Lacroix will present on Thursday, May 22, 10:30 to 11:45 am. The session will be moderated by Dr. Gordon MacDonald.
