Health Career Showcase

Are you a science student? Are you interested in a career in the health care profession? Come and join local health professionals to learn more about health careers on Prince Edward Island. This showcase is open to all science students, and will include over 25 professionals working in various health related industries, such as dentistry, nursing, cancer care, clinical laboratory science, mental health and community services. A light lunch will be provided.

Athletics and Recreation Open House

UPEI Athletics and Recreation Department will have an Open House for students, staff, faculty, and community members on October 3, 11:00 am–2:00 pm. The open house will showcase our varsity athletes, tours of the facility, our Panther Sports Medicine Clinic, as well as allow visitors to participate in a FREE 20 minute ZUMBA class, register for intramural programs, and learn more about the services the Sports Centre offers. There will also be a free Athletic Strength n' Cardio Circuit class from 11:15 am–Noon, and an Athletic Strength Circuit class from 1:15–2:00 pm. For those who are new to fitness and new to the UPEI Fitness Centre, take this time to meet with a trainer to go over the basics of fitness, learn proper technique, check out all of our fitness programs and tour the gym facility. Membership has its benefits. Come out and see what we have to offer!

Chemistry Seminar

Dr. Alan Doucette, Department of Chemistry, Dalhousie University will present a seminar on Wednesday, October 2 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Doucette’s presentation is entitled "From cells to Excel: Improved technologies for proteome processing and characterization." The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre Room 212.

Guest Speaker: building international experiences at home

Join one of Canada’s leading international educators to learn how to create an international experience at home. What is I@H? How do we do it? With only 3% of students studying abroad, what can be done on campus to create intercultural competency as a dynamic of internationalization for the 97% at home? UPEI students, staff and faculty are invited to a lecture by Wayne Myles, Director of Queen’s University International Centre and founding Director of the International Educator Training Program (IETP) on Tuesday, October 22 at 11:30 am in AVC 286B. 2013 Gairdner Lecture

The University of Prince Edward Island is proud to host the Canada Gairdner Wightman Laureate, Dr. James C. Hogg, for the 2013 Gairdner Lecture entitled “Developing new treatments for chronic lung disease.” The lecture will take place Tuesday, October 15 at 2:00 pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. Since earning his PhD in experimental medicine from McGill University in 1969, Dr. James C. Hogg has remained focused on the study of obstructive lung disease. He has advanced our understanding of how both healthy and diseased lungs work, including asthma, and the effects of smoking and pollution. He built a world-renowned centre for pulmonary and cardiovascular research at St. Paul’s Hospital in British Columbia, which trains more than 100 professionals every year. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a member of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Haunted House

The students of the UPEI Music Department invite all who are brave of heart to join them for their annual Haunted House at the Steel Building on UPEI campus on Friday October 25 and Saturday, October 26 at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5 and includes apple cider or hot chocolate.

2013 Julian Jaynes Symposium on Consciousness

The University of Prince Edward Island and the Department of Psychology are presenting "The 2013 Julian Jaynes Symposium on Consciousness" on Thursday October 10 in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Anand Paranjpe, Professor Emeritus, Simon Fraser University and his talk is entitled "An Eastern Perspective on Consciousness". Please join us on Thursday for Dr. Paranjpe's lecture. All are invited to attend.
