The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre wishes to inform the campus community that Concussion Awareness Week is from September 24 to 30 this year. Concussion Awareness Week was established in January 2021 to increase concussion awareness by providing information and encouraging action across Canada. Concussion Awareness Week is for everyone with a role in healthy active living – sport and recreation participants, parents, coaches, organizers, educators and more!

Why Concussion Awareness Matters

Concussion is a serious public health issue affecting all Canadians. Early recognition of concussion, proper medical assessment, and appropriate management make a difference in recovery. But Canadians need simple, easy-to-follow steps on how to care for a concussion or where to find good information. Through efforts such as Concussion Awareness Week, we can provide this.

Rowan Stringer’s Story

Rowan’s Law was named for Rowan Stringer, a high school rugby player from Ottawa, who died in the spring of 2013 from a condition known as second impact syndrome (swelling of the brain caused by a subsequent injury that occurred before a previous injury healed). Rowan is believed to have experienced three concussions over six days while playing rugby. She had a concussion but didn’t know her brain needed time to heal. Neither did her parents, teachers, or coaches. Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day were established to honour her memory and bring awareness to concussions and concussion safety.

A reminder that the deadline for the 1st Semester (Fall) Award Cycle is Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 11:59 pm.

Join us on October 17, at 7 pm, in the Faculty Lounge of UPEI’s SDU Main Building for a lecture titled “Camping in the Backyard” by Dr. Ed MacDonald, PEI historian and professor of history at UPEI.

The historical literature on camping in the Western world has been preoccupied with the period between the mid-1800s and the Second World War. It maintains that well-heeled city dwellers camped in order to escape summers in North America’s dirty, polluted, high-stress cities and connect physically and emotionally with the wild Nature. But it was the postwar era and the gradual democratization of tourism that brought camping to the masses. And the experience on Prince Edward Island tells a different story about the motives behind, and the experience of, camping. Focusing particularly on the Island’s provincial parks, “Camping in the Backyard” will unpack the rise and fall (and rise again) of camping in terms of the Island’s tourism industry.

Dr. MacDonald's lecture is part of the Institute of Island Studies' Island Lecture Series.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve more than minimal risk, renewals, and amendments, may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary materials are received.

Flags at UPEI were flown at half-mast on Sunday, September 24, to commemorate Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day. In 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September as a national memorial day to give Canadians an opportunity to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in keeping communities safe. 

The University is governed by a bi-cameral model, with a Board of Governors and a Senate. The UPEI Senate and UPEI Board of Governors have approved meeting dates for the upcoming academic year.

The Senate normally meets on Friday afternoons at 3:00 pm in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering Building, Room 128, and on Zoom, according to the dates on the Calendar of Senate Meetings web page. All meetings are open to members of the University community. Certain agenda items, including but not limited to the granting of degrees, academic dismissals, and human resources discussions, may require the Senate to go into a closed session.

Board meetings are held at 6:00 pm at Alumni Hall, 618 University Avenue, and on Zoom, according to the Calendar of Board Meetings on the UPEI website.

The next meeting of the UPEI Board of Governors is Tuesday, September 26, 2023.

Board meetings generally include sessions which are open to the public. Certain agenda items, including but not limited to human resources discussions, may require the Board to go into a closed session. For logistical purposes, members of the public who wish to attend the open session of a meeting are asked to contact board@upei.ca.

There are some exciting developments at UPEI as PEI aims to become net zero by 2040. Dr. Marva Sweeney-Nixon, Associate Vice-President of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, invites the UPEI campus community to an information session on September 28 in Kelley Memorial Building 211 at noon to find out more about the Province of PEI's net-zero framework, the Cleantech Academy, UPEI's proposed role, and our next steps. Representatives from the province and the Cleantech Academy will be presenting. You will also have an opportunity to ask any questions and give feedback and suggestions for the new interdisciplinary graduate program in cleantech leadership.

UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment is pleased to host an on-campus presentation at which members of the PEI Emergency Measures Organization will deliver the most up-to-date information on personal emergency preparedness (PEP). Following the presentations, Bradley MacIsaac, UPEI’s Emergency Risk Manager, will share what the University is doing to prepare for different types of emergencies and moderate a question-and-answer feedback session.

This session will take place on September 27, from 1:00–3:00 pm at the Performing Arts Centre and Residence building (PAC 121 South).  This will be held for all members of the campus community including employees and students. All attendees will be entered into a draw for a 72-hour pre-made emergency preparedness kit.

Applications and nominations are being accepted for the 2023 MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing!

Returning undergraduate students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to apply for a MacLauchlan Prize for Effective Writing by the October 6, 2023 deadline. Criteria and application forms for the four prize categories can be found through the links below. Note that there are numerous awards available per category, and the prize value has been generously increased to $750 this year. Submissions should be made electronically to scholarships@upei.ca.

The family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope PEI made another leadership gift to UPEI in July 2011 to create a substantial program of awards that encourages and recognizes student writing achievement. The gift honours H. Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor and recognizes the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning.

The UPEI Biology Department and the School of Climate Change and Adaptation invites the campus community to a research seminar on Monday, September 25, 2023, at 4:00 pm in Duffy Science Centre, Room 204. Dr. Andrew Rees, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science, Victoria University of Wellington, will present Using the paleo approach to enhance our understanding of climate change and lake health.” Dr. Rees is a candidate for a cross-appointed tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Biology and the School of Climate Change and Adaptation.

 

Leslie Cudmore, Research Grants Coordinator in the Office of Research Services, will provide a session outlining key research funding opportunities for early-career faculty members. The session will also explain the application process and tips for applying for funding.

Overview: Communication is critical to success in every field, especially in business and the workplace. In the Certificate in Professional Communications, participants will gain knowledge and practical experience in all key areas of communication, including proper workplace writing, public speaking and presentation skills, blog posts, websites, social media, and other forms of communication essential to functioning and growth in the professional world, as well as in-depth communication plans. This certificate is hybrid in nature; some content is online and asynchronous and some is in-person.

*Please note: If you already have completed the Intro to Workplace Writing course, you can take the rest of the certificate, and the price of the Intro to Workplace Writing course will be subtracted from the cost.

Overview: Does your organization/department need social media marketing but don’t know where to start? The Certificate in Social Media Marketing will teach participants the skills needed to successfully manage social media campaigns and create a space to ask as many questions as needed. This interactive certificate strives to give the tools needed for participants to manage social media channels with a confident brand voice. This certificate will focus on: 

  • Identifying needs within social media platforms 
  • Creating a unique brand voice 
  • Creating a plan that incorporates brand voice 
  • Assistance in the creation of a social media/marketing plan 
  • Assistance in the creation of content 

This certificate is spread over two days to give time to create content and have real-time feedback from the facilitator and other participants.  

Designed for: Anybody who operates the social media platforms of an organization/department, and is looking to grow their ability to market through social media.
