There will be a basic biosafety training session on October 12, 2023, at 1:00 pm in AVC 287N. Topics will include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone, including graduate students.
To attend, you must pre-register by contacting Jacky Buell, by the end of the day on October 10, 2022, by email (hse@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566-0901). Please provide your name, department, your supervisor’s name (if applicable), email address, and phone number in your email or voice message. Please indicate if you are a graduate student.

- NEW! Rec Time: A fun, non-competitive, social opportunity to play different sports and recreational activities on Thursdays starting October 5, 11:45 am to 1:30 pm (but you can come or go any time during this time frame. FREE. After logging into recreation.upei.ca, click on the "Rec Time" icon, and then on Rec Time (UPEI Staff/Faculty ONLY), and follow the prompts.
- Meditation and Gentle Yoga Class: All abilities welcome. A gentle class offered Wednesdays at 4:30 pm and Thursdays at 12:10 pm. FREE. After logging into recreation.upei.ca, click on the "Wellness" icon, and then on Meditation and Gentle Yoga - Thursdays and/or Wednesdays, and follow the prompts. This program is offered weekly from September to June!
- Fitness Training Subsidies: Did you know that staff and faculty receive huge discounts via fitness training subsidies on small group training and specialty fitness classes at the Sports Centre? Specialty Fitness Classes: 12 classes cost $55 (regular rate $115) and 6 classes cost $28 (regular rate $58). Small Group training (10 sessions) costs $75 (regular cost $150). How do you receive this rate? Simply log into recreation.upei.ca, and the system will recognize your status as a UPEI staff/faculty member and provide you with your price when registering. After logging in, click on the "Fitness Programming" icon, and the Small Group Training and/or Specialty Fitness Class icons, and follow the prompts.

Chris McGrath is the Principal and Founder of the Koru Coaching + Education Group, an organization dedicated to cultivating leadership capacity for social change, particularly for Indigenization and EDI within organizations. He held prior roles as Vice-President, Students (George Brown College), Dean of Students (Seneca College), Associate Vice-President, Student Experience and Registrar (Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College), and Assistant Dean, Student Affairs (University of Toronto, Mississauga). Chris holds an EdD (Western University), an MEd (University of Vermont), and a BA (University of Waterloo).

Frances Billingsley is the Associate Registrar and Director, Student Records and Scheduling, at York University. Frances received her EdD in Educational Leadership from Western University (2022), and an MEd (2008), a BEd (2000), and a BA (1997) from the University of Alberta.

Shawna Garrett is the President and CEO of EduNova Cooperative Ltd, an association of education and training providers in Nova Scotia. She has held prior appointments as a Transformation and Change Leader (College of the North Atlantic, CNA), Registrar (Mount Allison University and CNA, Qatar), and Executive Director, Enrolment Services (Acadia University). From 1999 to 2001, Shawna was the International Student Recruitment and Marketing Officer at UPEI. She holds an MEd (2007) from Acadia University and a BA (1997) from the University of Prince Edward Island.

The family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope PEI made another leadership gift to UPEI in July 2011 to create a substantial program of awards that encourages and recognizes student writing achievement. The gift honours H. Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor and recognizes the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning.
With the release of the UPEI Review Report, the University has coordinated two confidential processes to support faculty and staff who have experienced harm from harassment, sexual violence, or discrimination at UPEI.
Confidential third-party personal counselling:
The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre has engaged a psychologist to meet individually with faculty and staff, by appointment. Employees may email Caylin Jenkins at cbjenkins@upei.ca, indicating “Appointment required” in the subject line. Caylin will coordinate with the psychologist and confirm the time and location of the appointment with the employee.
Making a confidential disclosure:
People have asked about the process for making disclosures of incidents of harassment or discrimination by senior executive members of the University. The University has established an independent third-party process to address any such issues with Resonance Inc., a multidisciplinary human resources firm, based in Saint John, NB, that specializes in workplace assessments. DYKT you can make an image you are posting on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram more accessible for those with visual impairment?
On Facebook, you can find the option to edit alt text under the three dots in the top corner of your photo post prior to publishing. Instagram will generate an automatic alt text for your image, but you can edit it under advanced settings before you hit share. If you want to edit the alt text on an image on Twitter, look for the small alt tag on the photo.
The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre is providing flu and COVID-19 vaccine clinics for all students as well as faculty, staff, and their families in October. (Please note that children aged 12 and under have to go to Public Health for the COVID-19 booster, and children aged 2 and under have to get their flu shots at Public Health.) These are mass clinics (appointments are not required), and the vaccines are provided free. Please bring a provincial health card or student ID. You can receive both the flu shot and the COVID-19 booster at the same time, but it will require two injections.

In this discussion, we'll look at those six principles, both separately and together, and imagine ways our own campus community might work towards those ideals. Join Dr. Shannon Murray on October 5 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in the Teaching and Learning Centre (RL 230) for what promises to be a dynamic discussion.

Join us on October 17, at 7 pm, in the Faculty Lounge of UPEI’s SDU Main Building for a lecture titled “Camping in the Backyard” by Dr. Ed MacDonald, PEI historian and professor of history at UPEI.
The historical literature on camping in the Western world has been preoccupied with the period between the mid-1800s and the Second World War. It maintains that well-heeled city dwellers camped in order to escape summers in North America’s dirty, polluted, high-stress cities and connect physically and emotionally with the wild Nature. But it was the postwar era and the gradual democratization of tourism that brought camping to the masses. And the experience on Prince Edward Island tells a different story about the motives behind, and the experience of, camping. Focusing particularly on the Island’s provincial parks, “Camping in the Backyard” will unpack the rise and fall (and rise again) of camping in terms of the Island’s tourism industry.
Dr. MacDonald's lecture is part of the Institute of Island Studies' Island Lecture Series.

Show Up and Write (SU&W) drop-in writing sessions will be held in the Teaching and Learning Centre on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 9:30 am, starting on October 3. Show up and write an article, chapter, grant application, thesis…. Really, any writing project will do. Bring your favorite morning beverage, your laptop, books, and earbuds if you want background music, and get started. Studies show that academics tend to write more and more easily when they write together. SU&W sessions help writers focus and work more efficiently because the sessions are designed to limit distractions and “contain” the very time, place, and duration of a writing stretch. Consider making a date with a colleague or fellow graduate student who can be your “accountabilibuddy”— and make showing up even easier. Drop in on Tuesday or Friday mornings at 9:30 at RL 230.

Overview: This course will review the basics of marketing and promotion in the digital age, including the foundations of marketing and promotion. The course will be a mix of lectures, video content, interactive polling and discussions, and practical application through breakout sessions.
Designed for: People who want to do some marketing and promotion but have no formal training or education.
Duration: One course for six (6) hours.
