Peter McCarthy, PhD (external member for Rebecca Pike's PhD defense) "The Microbial Population of Marine Sponges: a Biotechnological Resource" Date: Friday, August 23, 2013 Location: Lecture Theatre B, AVC Time: 10:00 am Dr. Peter McCarthy was educated in England and received his PhD in microbiology from the University of Kent at Canterbury. He did a post-doctoral fellowship at Smith Kline Beckman and then joined Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in 1985. For the last seven years, Dr. McCarthy has worked as a research professor in the Marine Biomedical and Biotechnology Research group of Florida Atlantic University. Projects taking place in his lab include the identification of the symbiotic microbes present in deep-water marine sponges and the development of novel isolation methods to increase the numbers of microbes that can be cultured. This has resulted in the development of an extensive culture collection currently numbering over 19,000 isolates. The group works closely with the Marine Natural Products Chemistry group in the isolation and identification of chemicals produced by these unusual microbes with the goal of discovering new therapies for cancer and infectious diseases. New initiatives taking place in his lab include: the discovery of novel enzymes produced by marine microbes and their use in addressing biotechnological aspects of fuel generation and the investigation of methods to cultivate the pathogenic fungus Lacazia loboi. Dr. Samuel Workenhe, DVM, PhD is a post-doc from McMaster Immunology Research Centre and is a candidate for Adjunct and Graduate Faculty appointment in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology. On August 1, 2013, Brian returned full-time to the chemistry department. Exerices using your own body weight are designed to challenge your aerobically and increase your muscle tone. We'll also use TRX suspension training while on the track. The cost of the program is $50 for Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre members, $60 for non-members plus HST for the six classes. UPEI parking permits are still available exclusively to faculty & staff. You can print your application by visiting http://www.upei.ca/facilities/services/get-staff-and-faculty-parking-pe…. Please have the form completed before coming to the Accounting Office to have it processed. The Accounting Office is located on the lower level of the Kelley Memorial Building. Please note that there is a limited number of designated parking spaces available. They will be sold first come, first served. If you have a balance owing to UPEI, without a payroll deduction in place, you will be required to clear your balance before purchasing a parking permit. Payment can be made by cash/cheque, credit/debit. Payroll deductions are required for gated B & C for full-time, permanent part-time employees which will begin in September for 26 pay periods. This is an ongoing deduction for permit purchases in gated lots B & C. A reminder that parking permits will be going on sale for students August 27, 2013. At that time, permit sales will be moved to the kiosk, main floor of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre, until permits are sold out. Hours of operation are 9:00 am-3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
