On Friday, January 17, Dr. Tess Miller will address the complexity of the state of mathematics in PEI. Her presentation includes interviews with a number of university faculty, teachers, and students which highlight key difficulties in learning and teaching mathematics. Dr. Miller contrasts this with what large-scale assessment tells us about the state of mathematics in PEI and its impact on PEI's economic development. The session will conclude with an open discussion on initiatives to improve the state of mathematics in our province. The presentation takes place from 1:30-3:00 pm in UPEI's McDougall Hall, Room 242. All are welcome.
The 2014 idea competition (the UPEI Nicol Competition) is now underway! Three rounds of competition and cash prizes totaling $9,500. The first deadline is January 24, 2014.

This session will be the first in a series of Healthy Campus Sessions taking place over the coming months. There has been another break on the main water line. Facilities Management will be shutting off water to the KC Irving Chemistry Building, Bill and Denise Andrew Hall, Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, Blanchard Hall, Bernadine Hall and the daycare building (Campus Kids) today, January 8, at 12 noon.
Unfortunately, Facilities Management is unaware of how long repairs may take. Please consider taking precautions based on the level of hazards in your specific area (e.g. using Bunsen burners/chemicals in labs, welding, etc.) where activities may increase the need to use sprinkler systems or safety eyewash/shower stations.
We appreciate your patience and will work as quickly as possible to restore water in the affected buildings.

Please contact Sherri Pineau at animalcare@upei.ca by 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 23, 2014 if you or any of your staff will be attending this session.

Compute Canada will be hosting a series of Town Hall meetings in Atlantic Canada during the week of January 13, 2014. All faculty, students, and other researchers currently or potentially doing computational research are strongly encouraged to participate in the meeting closest to them.
The input received during these sessions will help shape the plan for the advancement of High Performance Computing (HPC) in Canada, as well as define the roles and responsibilities of Compute Canada nationally and the regional consortia such as ACEnet.
To ensure that the interests of Atlantic Canadian researchers continue to be well represented nationally, it is critical that we have active participation in these meetings.
Please visit the following link to register for the Charlottetown meeting, which will be held at 1:00 pm on January 14 in room 202 of the Duffy Science Building. https://computecanada.ca/en/about-us/news/general-news/320-consultation…
