On Wednesday, February 26, 1:30-3:30 pm, "Speak Up for Workplace Safety" seminar will take place in the Duffy Science Centre - lecture theatre 135. This seminar is intended to motivate workers to challenge the silence that can lead to unsafe practices and conditions. Talking to the boss or a co-worker about safety can be difficult. This session will help workers understand why there is often a culture of silence in our workplace and learn ways to overcome it, and will demonstrate one communication technique to bring safety issues to the forefront. Please register for this session through Debbie McKie (dmckie@upei.ca) Note that other Occupational Health and Safety training opportunities are available through WCB at this link: http://www.wcb.pe.ca/DocumentManagement/Document/pub_ohsseminarschedule…

On Wednesday, February 19 at 12:00 pm, UPEI's Dr. Ed MacDonald will present an illustrated luncheon talk entitled "Cradling Confederation: The Founding of the Confederation Centre of the Arts" at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown. This presentation will introduce attendees to the story behind the Centre that is now celebrating its golden jubilee this year. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the Box Office at the Confederation Centre, http://www.confederationcentre.com/en/ More information on the presentation: Fifty years ago this year, in 1964, on the 100th anniversary of the historic Charlottetown Conference, the Fathers of Confederation Memorial Buildings were opened in Charlottetown as a living memorial to Confederation's founders. The arts complex cost $5.6 million, and was cost-shared on a per capita basis by the federal government of Canada and the Dominion's ten provinces. How the complex we know today as the Confederation Centre of the Arts came to be is a remarkable, even improbable story, of converging trends, clever salesmanship, backroom intrigue, and audacious national vision.
