The Search Committee for the Dean of Science invites you to a public presentation by candidate, Dr. Debbie MacLellan on Friday, January 9 at 1:30 pm in KCI Room 104. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. All are welcome to attend.

Research on Tap returns for its sixth season of public discussion, debate, and ideas presented by researchers from the University of Prince Edward Island. Join our next conversation TONIGHT (Monday, January 5) at 7:00 pm at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown. Dr. Sunny Hartwig, an assistant professor of biomedical sciences at UPEI’s Atlantic Veterinary College, will lead a discussion entitled: Learning the language of healthy kidney development today, saying “no” to kidney disease tomorrow. The 2014-15 season of Research on Tap is presented in cooperation with the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), Atlantic Chapter. The RSC is Canada’s national academy and is the senior national body of distinguished scholars, artists, and scientists. Research on Tap meets the first Monday of every month from October to April. The full schedule of speakers can be found atupei.ca/research/research-on-tap

In 2010, Newfoundland-raised fiction writer Kathleen Winter embarked on a journey through the Northwest Passage from Greenland to Nunavut, including parts of the doomed Franklin Expedition’s route. "Boundless," the chronicle of her journey, blends travelogue and memoir, history, and nature writing. Winter will read from "Boundless" and from her new fiction on Monday, January 12, at 7:30 pm in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. A book signing will follow. Her reading is sponsored by the UPEI English Department with support from The Canada Council for the Arts.
Researchers at the UPEI Human Performance and Health Research Laboratory are seeking volunteers for a study investigating the physiological response to the use of standing desks in the workplace. If you: -are 18 years of age or older -work in an office setting -have a waist circumference greater than 88 cm (women) or 102 cm (men) -would like to try a standing desk in your workplace for three months, free of charge; and -would like to receive information about your personal cardio-metabolic disease risk factors including: baseline caloric needs, blood pressure, body composition, blood lipid profile, and aerobic fitness... Honorary degrees are conferred honoris causa, “for the sake of honour,” and are intended to recognize outstanding provincial, national, and international contributions in any field(s) of endeavour. Contributions should reflect extraordinary intellectual or artistic achievements or significant service to society at a standard of excellence that merits the University’s highest honour. The Department of Pathology and Microbiology invites you to attend seminars given by Dr. Anne Muckle, Associate Clinical Bacteriologist at the Atlantic Veterinary College, on January 12 and January 13, 2015. Dr. Muckle is a candidate for a tenure track Clinical Bacteriologist position, Competition #18A14. Her teaching seminar will be at 10:30 am on Monday, January 12 in AVC-A and is titled "Peering into the Enterobacteriaceae Universe: Let's Look at Escherichia coli." Her diagnostic seminar will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 13 in AVC-C and is titled "Who ya gonna call? - The AVC Diagnostic Services Bacteriology Laboratory will help you deal with the strange and weird stuff that comes through your door."
