Campus phone system: Bell Aliant network is being configured for 10-digit local dialing (area code followed by the 7-digit phone number) effective August 23, 2014. UPEI's 4-digit internal dialing will NOT be affected by this change. All external (off-campus) dialing will need to have the area code added when dialing, ex: 9 902 566 0424 ("9" for an outside line, then the area code, followed by the local number). All departments should ensure all pre-programmed local phone numbers have the area code included. Reminder: start to program your telecommunications equipment and features now including: phones (landline and cellular), speed dial lists, phone functions such as call forwarding, fax machines, modems and dial internet connections, devices for the hearing impaired, security or alarm systems, etc. Add the area code to your phone number appearing on stationery and business cards, etc. Be sure to include your area code when giving out your phone number. If you have any questions please contact Peggy Court at 0424 or email mcourt@upei.ca

Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee will host Master of Science Defence on Monday, August 18 at 1:00 pm in the Health Science Building, Room 301. Katie Beck, BSc. will defend her Master of Science thesis entitled: “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way: Identifying Factors of Physical Activity That Influence Participation in Older Adults.” All are welcome to attend.
Dear campus community, I am pleased to announce a search will be initiated for qualified candidates for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Sustainability, Resilience and Island Contexts to be staffed at UPEI. Islands of the world are being buffeted by global climatic, economic and cultural change. Emigration and resource depletion are decreasing the capacity for economic development, unique cultures are being disrupted by global cultural transformation and sea level rise is threatening the very existence of some small island jurisdictions. At the same time, island peoples and organizations have always been resilient, incorporating novel solutions and strategies to challenging circumstances. The CRC in Sustainability, Resilience, and Island Contexts adopts the islands of the world as living labs, not only to better understand and analyze the interaction of social, economic and ecological forces on sustainability and the resilience of these particular places. The CRC will apply the knowledge gained from these settings to address the questions of sustainability elsewhere in the world. A CRC Application Review Committee for this opportunity is being convened and I would welcome your suggestions on members for this committee. Please contact me by email (rgilmour@upei.ca) or phone (566-0637). More information on the Canada Research Chairs program may be found at www.chairs.gc.ca. Additional information about the new Chair can be found at www.upei.ca/research/research-chairs and the UPEI’s Human Resource web site http://www.upei.ca/hr/competition/21a14 Dr. Robert Gilmour VP Research and Graduate Studies

PEI Energy Systems is working on repairs to the steam line in the tunnel that will shut off domestic hot water in Cass Science Hall, Kelley Memorial Building, Duffy Science Centre, Memorial Hall, and the Chaplaincy Centre. This work is expected to continue until early next week. There will be hand sanitizers placed in all washrooms in each building. This shutdown is necessary to properly repair the steam lines that were temporarily repaired back in the spring. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Jackie MacPhail at jmacphail@upei.ca or 6034.
UPEI’s Climate Research Lab needs your help to boost one of its projects to the next round in an MIT-sponsored competition about communicating climate risks and coastal vulnerabilities. CLIVE, the coastal erosion visualization tool created by the Climate Research Lab and the Spatial Interface Lab at Simon Fraser University, has reached the semi-finals in MIT’s CoLab Communication Coastal Risk and Resilience contest. A description of CLIVE, from the team’s submission to the contest: “Using 3D game engine technology adapted to serious scientific communication, CLIVE enables citizens to interactively fly around and view the province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) at all scales, while manipulating historical data and projected models through time. By allowing citizens to view scientific data and explore climate change projections at any scale in their own neighbourhood, we help them understand these often abstract phenomena at local, human scales. We believe this is a way to connect all stakeholders to this mutual problem, enhancing awareness, education, dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving at all scales of society and government.” To register and help vote CLIVE into the top spot, or to learn more about the competition, visit http://www.climatecolab.org/plans/-/plans/contestId/1300801
In light of the spread of the Ebola virus in West Africa, and the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring an 'international emergency,' the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) has updated its travel warning for the following countries: Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and it is possible the travel and health emergency warning could expand into the wider West Africa region. Given the gravity of the situation, the University of Prince Edward Island is suspending all travel to Ebola affected regions that have been identified by WHO and DFATD until further notice. In addition, the international health emergency declared by WHO MAY also affect the timely arrival of international students from the affected countries for the fall semester. Therefore, it is prudent that we are all aware of this possibility and prepare for an adjustment of the start date for new students. The International Relations Office will continue to monitor the situation and will keep you posted as the situation progresses. For further information and updates, please visit the following websites: DFATD: http://travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories WHO: http://www.who.int
