Dr. Knut Wiik Vollset, a Postdoctoral Fellow from Uni Research Environment, Bergen Norway, will be giving a seminar on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 1:30 pm in AVC Room 286B/C entitled:

"Disentangling the role of salmon lice on the marine survival of Atlantic Salmon:  A Norwegian perspective".

The effects of salmon lice on the recruitment survival of salmon is widely debated and has huge economic and political ramification through its limitations on the further development of the salmon aquaculture industry, and the impacts on conservation and harvestable surplus of salmon. In Norway, this conflict of interest has reached an important crossroad as the Norwegian state has limited the increase of biomass and new license for production of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout in Norway. Recently the Norwegian government suggested a new regulation frame work, where regulation of salmon lice levels and biomass in fish farms should be more directly linked to impacts on wild fish. Some key scientific studies on the effect of salmon lice on marine survival of Atlantic salmon and the ongoing NFR project BaseLice will be presented. A recently held workshop which aimed at scrutinizing the new regulation frame work will also be discussed.

Everyone welcome.

Friday evening, 8 pm, at the Benevolent Irish Society (BIS) on North River Road, there will be an evening of ancient Persian music by Saeed & Lana, with poems by the beloved Persian poet Rumi, read by P.E.I. poet laureate, Deirdre Kessler.

The November Island Studies Lecture will be Tuesday, November 15, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus, featuring Dr. Jean Mitchell of UPEI’s Sociology/Anthropology Department sharing “Stories of Weathering Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu.” With winds of up to 300 kph, Cyclone Pam was the largest cyclone to make landfall in the South Pacific islands since recordkeeping started. It struck the island of Vanuatu on March 13, 2015, leaving in its wake enormous losses of infrastructure, housing, animals, and food gardens. But why did so few islanders die during the cyclone and its aftermath? Join Dr. Mitchell as she presents powerful insights into how to survive a cyclone.  Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend. For more info, contact Laurie at brinklow@upei.ca.

Head to http://projects.upei.ca/scent/ for something a little different: this week's article is entitled "McDonald's Training is Now a Path to a College Diploma." Is this really, as one person quoted in the article says, "a hint of where we are going in the future in postsecondary education"? Read the article, fend off a Big Mac attack, and leave a comment. Questions? Write to Gerald at fdo@upei.ca.
