The monthly meeting of the UPEI & Friends Neuroscience Journal Club will be held on Friday September 14, 2018 from 3-4 pm in the lecture theatre (note the change of location) of the Duffy Research Centre (NRC). All neuroscience research students as well as faculty, scientists and staff with an interest in neuroscience topics are welcome to attend. Journalist, broadcaster, and historian Gwynne Dyer returns to UPEI for a lecture on the return of nationalism as a movement around the world. Dyer will present “The Populist Revolt: its causes and cures” at 7:30 pm, Thursday, September 13 in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall at UPEI. The lecture is free and is presented by the SDU Institute for Christianity and Culture.

Registration for the "Reigniting Curiosity and Inquiry in Higher Education: A Working Conference" being held at UPEI November 2-4th, 2018 is now open! Spots are limited!

Are you interested in reigniting your students’ desire and ability to inquire“? Are you interested in being part of a group of SoTL researchers actively investigating Issues of curiosity and inquiry in the university classroom? This working conference will bring together teaching professors/researchers from across North America to discuss effective ways to increase and maintain student inquiry in our higher education classrooms and explore how to help our students to transfer those attitudes and skills to other academic learning experiences, the workplace, and beyond. During the three day working conference, attendees will have the opportunity to share their own experiences and learn from those of others, participate in the creation of professor and student curiosity and inquiry materials, and form research interest groups which will begin actively collaborating on curiosity and inquiry research questions particular to higher education.

Cost of registration for this conference is only $75 for professors/researchers and $25 for graduate students. The Faculty of Arts wishes to inform the University community of the sudden passing of Dr. Colmán O'Hare, a retired faculty member of the Department of English. During his career at the University of Prince Edward Island, which spanned several decades, Dr. O'Hare touched the lives of many students, colleagues, and staff. UPEI extends condolences to his wife Barbara, his three children, granddaughter, and extended family. Through a partnership between UPEI and Synapse, a number of registrations are available, at no cost, for faculty and students to attend Invest Atlantic 2018, an entrepreneurial educational and networking event that is being held at various locations in downtown Charlottetown on Wednesday, September 19 and Thursday, September 20. Representatives from more than 200 start-ups, entrepreneurs, investors and post-secondary institutions in the region will be attending this event that includes keynote speakers, public "pitch sessions" by selected start-ups to potential investors, and plenty of opportunities to network in a social setting. Please share this opportunity with students and colleagues who wish to learn more about the growing entrepreneurial community in the Atlantic Region.

Dr. Bill Whelan (Professor and Chair, Department of Physics) will host an informal session on tips for applying for NSERC Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) funding. In addition to being a Co-Investigator on a successful RTI grant application, Dr. Whelan has served as a member of the NSERC Grant Selection Committee GSC-29 (General Physics) and numerous other grant review panels for NSERC, CIHR, and the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute. All are welcome, but please note that RTI applicants and co-applicants must each currently hold or be applying for an eligible NSERC research grant at the time of application, such as a Discovery Grant or Collaborative Research and Development Grant.

Dr. Michael Moore, Director, Marine Mammal Center at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Cape Cod, will give a public lecture called “Food for Thought: How we all kill whales” on Friday, September 14, at 7:00 pm, in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, UPEI. 

Human activity in the marine environment is increasingly having an impact on cetaceans—whales, dolphins, and porpoises—sometimes resulting in the unintentional entanglement and death of animals. Dr. Moore will discuss these pressing issues, which concern Canada and other nations that have substantial fishing and shipping industries in marine environments. There is no charge to attend Dr. Moore’s lecture. All are welcome to attend.

Dr. Moore's presentation is part of AVC's 2018 Animal Welfare in Practice conference, which is focusing on the timely topic of whale stranding. Karma Yoga will not take place in the chaplaincy centre today, Tuesday, September 11. We will though have it outside in the quad, weather permitting. Please contact Angela Marchbank at amarchbank@upei.ca after 11 am to find out the status. 

The Karma Yoga class is held every Tuesday from 12:10–12:55 pm at UPEI Chaplaincy Centre or outside in the Quad. Fee: Fee for each class is a donation to the UPEI food bank - $5 or food donation.

This program provides a full body strength and flexibility workout which tones the body. Long stretches will melt away stress and create a feeling of deep relaxation. Please bring your own mat and/or towel and water.
