With the end of the semester aproaching, UPEI Security Services would like to remind you that all the designated permit parking lots and parking meters continue to be enforced year round without exception. Starting April 24th, permit enforcement is relaxed in general parking lots A, B General, D, and E until the fall semester begins.

Mr. Bill Waterman, candidate for a tenure track accounting position with the Faculty of Business, will present a public presentation on "Indigenous Business: Strategies, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Sustainability" Friday, April 7 at 9:00 am in the Don and Marion McDougall Hall, room 329. Dr. Jeff C. Clements, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Health Management, AVC, will present a seminar on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 12:30 pm in the Duffy Science Centre, Room 204.  Dr. Clements talk is entitled Marine Animal Behaviour in a High-CO2 World and discusses Ocean acidification (OA) which is expected to result in physiological effects to marine organisms. Recently, however, it has been acknowledged that animal behaviou can be influenced by OA and that these behavioural changes are important when considering ecosystem impacts of OA. In this talk, Dr.Clements will introduce and discuss OA effects on marine organisms' behaviour.

UPEI is updating to a newer version of Moodle for the spring and summer session. Because of this, the courses for the Spring/Summer session are being generated on the upgraded version of Moodle. This version of Moodle is available at moodle31.upei.ca (courses will be available there).

What's new in new Moodle?

If you're familiar with using Moodle, the updated version will look and feel very similar to the previous version. We have a list of some of the new changes that have been made in the update: Moodle 3.1 : new features

What if I have old teaching materials that I need for next semester?

If you have teaching materials from previous versions of your next semester courses, you can import those materials into the new version of Moodle by doing a Backup and Restore. We have a video that shows each step of the process which you can watch here: Moodle Backup and Restore. The E-Learning Office will also be hosting working sessions where we will walk through the process, you can register through this form. The E-Learning Office is happy to help you backup and restore your materials if you need assistance.

Final grade submissions:

With the launch of myUPEI, Moodle will be the where final grades are submitted. If you keep track of your grades in Moodle or with a spreadsheet like Excel or Google Spreadsheets, this should make final grade submissions easier. We go over the changes in a bit more detail on this blog post.

We will be running workshop sessions on Final Grade Entry and the Moodle Gradebook. You can sign up for these workshops here.

On the first two days of exams - Monday and Tuesday, April 10 and 11, between 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, a chili dinner is served at the Chaplaincy Centre, free for the students.

About 300 students show up each day for smiles and conversation during the busy exam period. We are looking for faculty and staff to help out and provide encouragement and support to students. If you are able to volunteer some time, please sign up here.

The Faculty of Business is pleased to present four candidates for a tenure-track position in Management. On Wednesday, April 5, Dr. Umar Boodoo will present a public presentation of research and scholarship on "The Influence of Unions on CEO Compensation during the Financial Crisis." The presentation will be held in MCDH 246 at 11:30 am. All are welcome.

TNT Construction and Maintenance has been awarded the contract for the Dalton Hall Demolition project. Construction is expected to begin Monday, April 3, 2017 and is expected to take approximately 8 weeks to complete. During this time there will be noise and possibly some vibrations. The area will be considered a construction zone. The work will consist of the demolition of the interior of Dalton Hall, including electrical and mechanical. It will also include some exploratory work of the existing foundation.

While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this renovation project that will enhance the facility.

Have you ever encountered a student who has difficulty communicating with you but you are just not sure how to approach the situation?

Join Jaclyn Borden, Stars for Life Foundation, for an enlightening presentation and resources on working with students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on March 31 at 2:00 pm in McDougall Hall Rm. 246.

This presentation will give a brief overview of the Autism Spectrum and how it affects individuals. It will discuss the characteristics and behaviours associated with autism, as well as the sensory issues often experienced by those on the spectrum.

UPEI’s Department of Athletics and Recreation invites you and your family to an open house to celebrate the grand opening of new fitness studios in the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre! The open house runs 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 1.

The new studios include a new, two-storey 2,400 square-foot activity training centre, which features a lower floor to accommodate general fitness classes and an upper-level training area equipped with stationary bicycles and interval training capabilities. The new studios are available for private fitness classes, such as spin and yoga.

Use of the fitness centre during the open house will be free. Join us for a tour of the facility at 10:30 am and noon, and take part in free fitness classes in the new studios. The gym will feature a Kids Zone with camp counsellors, face painting, and activities to entertain the kids while parents explore the facilities.

Information will be available about all of the programs and services at the UPEI Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. Community memberships will be available!

Yoga class will continue to be held every Wednesday from 12:10 pm – 12:55 pm at the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre. This program provides a full body strength and flexibility workout which tones the body. Long stretches will melt away stress and create a feeling of deep relaxation. Please bring your own mat and/or towel and water.

Fee for each class is a donation to the UPEI food bank - $5 or food donation.

As part of the Women in Science Speaker Tour, sponsored by Science Atlantic in partnership with WISE Atlantic, Dr. Karen Crosby, Mount Allison University Biology Department, will be visiting UPEI on Friday March 31st, 12:30-1:30, Duffy Science Centre Rooom 204. The purpose of this tour is to showcase the research of female faculty in Atlantic Canada. More information can be found here. Please join the UPEI Biology Department for the final seminar in our Winter Seminar Series as we welcome back a UPEI Alumna and celebrate Women in Science.

PEI Energy Systems has identified a leak in the district heating lines at the Health Sciences Building branch. In order to repair the line it will require a shutdown of the heating system and domestic hot water for the Health Sciences Building (cold water is not impacted). This shutdown is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, 2017 beginning at 7:00am and is expected to take approximately 8 hours to complete.

To do the repair PEI Energy Systems will be required to excavate an area on the south side of the Health Sciences Building, as of a result the access road between the Health Sciences Building and SDU Main Building will be closed.

In recognition of the outstanding performance and dedication of our faculty and staff, a number of annual awards have been created to acknowledge their efforts and achievements.

Up to 10 Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Faculty, Librarians and Clinical Veterinary Professionals and four Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Staff will be awarded in 2017. These awards will be presented during a Celebration of Colleagues to be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre.

Susan Connolly, Associate Vice-President, Human Resources & Legal, will lead the process and chair the committee to select award recipients.
