Project Management is both a discipline and an art. As a discipline it offers a solid well researched methodology for project success. As an art it requires confidence and skills in managing people and change. This 3-day course is an introduction to project management methodology, tools and techniques that can be applied to projects. Course participants will develop skills and obtain knowledge on how to plan, manage and deliver successful projects in any work environment. Participants will gain an overall understanding of Project Management, the four phases of the project lifecycle, how to use fundamental tools and techniques to manage projects, and how to manage a project from beginning to end while controlling time, scope, cost and quality.

Department of Biomedical Sciences Research Seminar

Dr. Paul Bernard
“Early Life Seizures, Long-term Consequences”

DATE: Thursday, September 28, 2017
LOCATION: 286A, AVC Learning Commons
TIME: 11:30 am

Lecture
“Introduction to Cardiac Physiology”

DATE: Friday, September 29, 2017
LOCATION: 286A, AVC Learning Commons
TIME: 10:30 am

Dr. Bernard received his PhD in Neuro-Pharmacology, Behavioral Neuroscience and Neuro Anatomy at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, graduating in 2008. He is currently an Assistant Research Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neurology, Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado. His primary research interest is in the area of long-term consequences of early life seizures. A significant portion of individuals with autism spectrum disorder and/or intellectual disability have a history of early life seizures. The impact of early life seizures on long-term neurological outcome is not known. Do early life seizures cause/contribute to long-term deficits or are they simply correlative and a consequence of an underlying pathology?

Dr. Bernard is a candidate for a faculty positon in physiology in the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Flags at UPEI will be flown at half-mast on Sunday, September 24 to commemorate Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day. In 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as National Memorial Day to give Canadians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, which made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe.

The Faculty of Education invites members of the campus community – students, faculty and staff – to attend a public presentation by Rose Neville, candidate for a tenure-track position in Educational Leadership. The presentation takes place from 9am-10am on 25-Sept-2017 in Memorial 417. For further information, contact Karen-Anne O’Halloran.

The Atlantic Veterinary College’s 29th Open House is a fun event showcasing exciting aspects of a career in veterinary medicine. There is something for everyone including exhibits, animals, a parade of dog breeds, and much more. Tour the college, dress like a surgeon, see the painted horse. Children can bring their stuffed animals to the teddy bear clinic, get their faces painted, and take home a balloon animal.

This free event, hosted by students, faculty and staff, offers the community an opportunity to get an inside view of a busy veterinary college.

The Open House runs 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 30.

Wind Turbine Dynamics Modelling in the Design Process

Dr. Matthew Hall, assistant professor
Where: 212 SSDE
When: Thursday, September 21, 12:00 pm

Abstract:
Numerical dynamics models are the standard solution for verifying that a wind turbine design will perform well across the full range of expected operating conditions. Physical models, meanwhile, provide experimental validation to ensure that the numerical models are sufficiently accurate. This talk will overview both numerical and physical modelling approaches used in wind turbine design, including for offshore applications. One of the newest methods in this area is creating hybrid models which combine the best of both worlds. Recent proof-of-concept tests show promising results. New research with the UPEI wave tank will aim to advance these methods for use in floating wind turbine design.

All are welcomed to attend this weekly seminar. Learn about the innovative research and collaborations the faculty and graduate students are leading at the School of Sustainable Design Engineering!

The UPEI Women's Rugby team is holding a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society at their home game Saturday, September 23 at 2:00 pm. Join UPEI's Dr. Brian Wagner for a demonstration of some incredible chemistry!

Dr. Wagner will demonstrate the phenomenon of fluorescence, reflecting both his UPEI research work, and also showing that fluorescence is all around us, by demonstrating the fluorescence of everyday things, including the spice turmeric, vitamin B2, paper money and laundry detergent. He will also show the chemiluminescence of luminol, and discuss how it is used in forensic science to look for traces of blood.
