There will be a UPEI Biosafety Refresher training session:
Wednesday, February 13th, 2019 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
AVC, Room 287N

This session is required for those who attended the Basic Biosafety course in 2016 or earlier. It is not a substitute for Basic Biosafety. Topics to be covered include a review of basic biosafety principles, a practical approach to spill cleanup, and an update on what’s new at UPEI in the field of biosafety.

To attend the Biosafety Refresher course, you must pre-register by contacting Sarah Sudworth, before February 11th, 2019 by email (ssudworth@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566-0901). 

Please include your name, department, supervisor’s name (if applicable), email address, and phone number in your email or voice message.

The Healthy Campus Committee is providing a 45 minute class that offers gentle yoga stretches and muscle strengthening and toning through slow controlled movements. The meditation segment of the class creates more calm, inner peace and balance that benefits both your emotional wellbeing and overall health. This is a class for all fitness levels. The class will be held on Mondays at 12;10 pm - 12:55 pm in Fitness Studio #2, February 4, 11, 25 and March 4. Free but pre-registration required as we only have space for 12. The ACLC Workshop: The Insight Approach to Communication and Conflict, will take place Friday 1st February from 6-9pm and Saturday 2nd February from 9am - 5pm, in Andrew Hall 142, and will be led by Dr. Cheryl Picard. There is no charge for this workshop and Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Picard comes to us from Carleton University where she is Professor Emeritus and where she founded the Graduate Diploma in Conflict Resolution, the Centre for Conflict Education and Research, and the Mediation Centre.

Dr. Picard is a leading scholar and practitioner in the skills of mediation and conflict resolution, and she is the founder of the insight approach, a learning-centered method of mediation which will be the subject of the workshop. 

In this workshop, students will learn: 1) new ways of thinking about difficult and conflictual interpersonal and group relations 2) how to deepen the learning conversation by listening to understand and asking about interpretation, meaning- making, feelings and values, 3) how to link, delink and verify insights, and 4) to advance their existing communication and leadership skills and develop new ones.

This is a great opportunity for students to learn from someone with training in criminology and social work, and to get better connected to some of the people in these fields.

Saturday is the annual Shoot for the Cure game at UPEI! UPEI Women's Basketball hosts UNB at 6:00 pm in the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. The game is an annual event in support of breast cancer research.

Staff and faculty can pick up free tickets to the game TODAY at noon in the hallway of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre. Tickets are available as supplies last.

The game will feature a bake sale, raffle draw, and Shoot for the Cure t-shirts.

The Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success since it was launched in the fall of 2007, with over $1.25 million in donations to date. All 47 U SPORTS women’s basketball schools will once again participate in the program for the eighth year in a row.

Stick around for the 8:00 game as UPEI Men's Basketball hosts UNB.

Come join us at an OPEN HOUSE for the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre as we welcome our newest member Lynne Fraser, Nurse Practitioner. The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre has expanded its hours of operation and will be open five days per week on a year-round basis. Colleen MacQuarrie and Sobia Ali-Faisal from the Department of Psychology will be facilitating a workshop on white privilege in the academy. They will be applying liberation psychological theory to:
- examine white privilege and white supremacy in the academy
- provide space for attendees to explore and navigate their emotions and thoughts around their own privilege, and 
- provide time to practice strategies to challenge their white privilege.

We are holding this workshop to support UPEI's efforts at honouring the TRC recommendations and creating a safe environment for everyone. (Side note: We will also be holding a workshop for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities on campus on March 4th. Please keep an eye out for a notice regarding that very soon.)

Investigation of the Effects of Sedentary Behaviour and Moderate Exercise on Glucose Tolerance and Insulin Sensitivity

Are you a healthy non-smoker between the ages of 18-50? Researchers at the UPEI Department of Applied Health Sciences are seeking participants for a clinical study to investigate the effects of sedentary behaviour and moderate exercise on glucose metabolism.
You may qualify if you are:
- healthy
- a non-smoker
- not diabetic
- not pregnant
- aged 18-50 years
This research project has received approval from the UPEI Research Ethics Boards. February is Black History Month. During Black History Month, Canadians celebrate and honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.

In recognition of Black History Month, Robertson Library and the UPEI Student Diversity Office (SDO) are presenting I Am Not Your Negro, an Oscar-nominated documentary narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. This documentary “…explores the continued peril America faces from institutionalized racism.”
